66 exhaust routing

Just recently finished a motor and tranny swap along with extensive cab floor repair on my c10 and as always there's more to be done. I ran the exhaust with Thrush glasspacks and while they were suitable in my teen years I want it quieter now. Right now they dump in front of the rear tires and I'd really like the new setup with turbo mufflers to exit straight out back. Problem is with this being lowered about 3", on the driver side the panhard bar is in the way. I was wondering if the mount for the bar on the frame could be modified to raise or lower it two inches to give me a clear shot. Making a new mount is no problem but I don't know if there's some geometry I'm overlooking as to why this may or may not be a good idea. If this can't be done I'll have to cross over the diff and take the pipes to the outside of the frame.

How is the spacing from front to back? Enough to bring the exhaust pipe straight down between the axle and panhard bar? I can't tell from your picture looking straight at the back if the bar sticks out far enough from the axle like mine does.

Just lowering should not affect how the exhaust routes because it would have been routed to avoid the axle or panhard bar from hitting the exhaust when driving over a large bump with stock suspension when the axle can move all the way up to the rubber bumper on the frame.

If you must, it should be harmless to re-work the panhard bar in some way because all it does is keep the axle from moving side to side.

I went outside the frame. It worked well because my gas tank is right there in the middle anyhow.

Perhaps the side exit may still be fine if you had a quieter muffler though. I just sold a truck having before the tire exits. I'm not into exhaust noise at all so i had added resonators to each pipe. It was nice and quiet with that arrangement.

With my truck being lowered I envy stock height or lifted trucks. I probably have 1 ½ between the bar and duff and 2" between the bar and the crossmember. Not enough to sneak 2 ½ out. If nobody tried making a new mount I might be the guinea pig. The mount is easily removed with 3 rivets and if my plan goes south I can always put it back

Just route the exhaust over the axle on the passenger side where there's plenty of room. Your panhard bar doesn't go all the way across the truck like mine does. If dual exhaust, just run both pipes next to each other until after the differential and panhard bar.

I considered doing that and its 6 in one half dozen in the other but im leaning towards lowering the mount to allow two straight runs out. Doing exhaust is a pain enough but I enjoy the thought of a custom mount. If the mount doesn't work for whatever reason I might take them both out on the passenger side.

I have a 455 pontiac in my 63, 2.5" pipes and going outside of the frame, one straight thru big size glass packed muffler, and dumps about 6" before the rear wheels, it is actually not loud, good sound just sounds a bit wonky as i must still add a crossover tube.
Could run it the same and add more mufflers or just extend pipes on outside of frame. Depending your wheel size it should fit. Will add some pics i took from internet.. not my truck but neatly done.

With a rear tank, lowered and wanting a rear-exit, it was a challenge. Add to that wanting a relatively quiet truck.

I have an LS, Speed Engineering headers, to 8” Flowmaster universal cats, then a 2.5” stainless system from there. The pipes were a kit, and elbows/45’s etc from Amazon that I cut & welded sections together to route accordingly. The mufflers were Jones Exhaust from summit which I LOVE. They are super quiet at idle, have a nice tone going down the road with zero drone, but blatt loudly at WOT.

Fabbing all this up was a challenge but I’m very pleased with the result.

That is a great job on running that exhaust. I took the easy way out and dumped in front of the axle.

Thanks. I considered it but put dumping in front of the rear axle, or in front of the rear tires as an absolute worst-case-scenario bailOut option, if I simply couldn’t fit over under and around the trailing arms, axle, panhard bar and tank.

Yes, there are a lot of added degrees of resistance with all the bends….and I’m sure the theorists decree I’ve lost HP, but that wasn’t the goal.

Goal was quiet-ish, rear-dump behind the rear tires, and no smell (hence the cats). All three boxes were checked with this setup.
