The TVs were on everywhere. Like I’m sure it was for you, being so close to DC there was fears that we as kids could somehow be in harms way as all the details slowly emerged and we got a handle on the situation. My kids didn’t even hear anything about it at school yesterday. My wife and I had to talk to them and remind them what happened like we do every year. Such a sad, sad memory.

I left Va to get away from all the Washington suburb growth. But it is still very much home to me.
I fondly remember the lockdown state. My dad was busy getting things together to go help, my mom was a teacher at a private school and had to wait until all the kids got picked up from her class, then she went to get my younger brother and sister from school. By the time all that happened I was on the bus home. Was definitely an erie time, we built BMX jumps in the power line easement and all the locals showed up to just hang out. In a way, it was our way of starting to process what happened with our friends. Being so close to both Dulles and National it was weird seeing no planes too. Only planes you saw were military jets.

My wife and I were talking last night about how weird it is that to many it seems like just an ordinary day. I had just visited NYC, and the WTC towers with my dad in July of 2001, so it seemed to hit even harder. About 10 years ago my brother and I were in NYC for a night partying, the next morning on our way out of town we did the memorial and museum, talk about sober you up.... We both ended up walking away from one another to take it in on our own, very powerful place.

I'll be in VA another 17ish years until I retire from the county, we've since moved out to Fauquier to get away from some of the growth, not far enough though!
