Re: eBay NOS fleetside tailgate
I think there was one on FB for $1500 a few months ago. It didn't sell. Probably the same guy.
Maybe if it was a 67 or 68 NOS tailgate... |

For posterity sake.
US $1,999.95 Quote:
This apple is only $1. For sale for $1.50. This truck is almost red. Truck is painted blue. Item is 100% perfect! Except for this one flaw... Car is in primer, just needs minor body work, sanding, and paint. 95% done!!!! No it,s not! lol Why would you even say "a statement" if you immediately contradict yourself. I'm not saying the bent lip is an issue--it isn't. I just don't get these contradictory sales ads. |

Re: eBay NOS fleetside tailgate
When I got my 68 GMC it had a tommy gate on it. I got the truck to my shop and a couple weeks later the guy I got it from said Hey do you want the tailgate off this truck? well yes yes I do. He said it has been in my rafters since like 68-9. You bet I'd like that. He I also have an extra set of the buddy bucket seats you can have too........ Great day. Jim

Re: eBay NOS fleetside tailgate
I paid $1200 in 1973 for my '68 C/10 Stepside, and it came with a free tailgate.

Re: eBay NOS fleetside tailgate
What the seller wants and what the seller gets are probably a different number, especially in the current economic environment

Re: eBay NOS fleetside tailgate
Maybe just look for a whole wrecked/disabled truck that happens to have a good tailgate (yes, probably not common..) - but could be cheaper and you'd get some extra parts out of the deal..

Re: eBay NOS fleetside tailgate
This is a depressing trend for somone who just wants a tailgate. I have a ~'72 8' Fleetside bed on a 1-ton frame ex-farm trailer. Cost me $200 in 2006. Never had a tailgate. Not the kinda project I would blow two grand on a tailgate for.
Actually, I've heard Squarebody tailgates will fit. The style lines are all wrong, and they're a couple inches higher, I hear, but it would keep junk from falling out the back on a dump run.

Re: eBay NOS fleetside tailgate
This part at that price point are catered to the "high rollers" in the hobby, which have no issues spending $125k to build an absolutely perfect show truck. As with most NOS sheetmetal, this thing needs some work.
Personally I find much more value in a new old take off tailgate, which there seems to be a few of them surfacing.

Re: eBay NOS fleetside tailgate
Of course my post was the obligatory ''Crochetty Old Man Rant.''
I do understand the high roller trend. While I can't play, I see they found something good in this design, that's not available with current rolling stock. Something I saw as a 17 year-old from my high school lawn at lunch when they first came out. I bought a good used truck when I was 23. A stubborn streak has compelled me to keep it. Every time a component needed repair or replacement, I tried to make an improvement or innovation. It's a sleeper with a Hot Rod L6. On my third engine with 406 on the clock. It does gall me sometimes, when filling up [which at 12 MPG is often] that some young dude asks to buy it, as though I've been the steward of his flippable Barn Find lo these many years. Anyway I keep getting eBay notices about Chevy tailgates now that I clicked on it. A seller has an Orange Stepside Tailgate for only $750 and $78 shipping. And it's dinged! As a Coffee Table! If he wanted a hundred for it, I'd talk him down to $75. [RANT ENDS]

Re: eBay NOS fleetside tailgate
I'm building the last vehicle I will ever build due to the Cost of parts now. I consider myself a hobbiest who likes to do things correctly but correctly is now a 80g build. Even though they are selling for high numbers as well I just don't Joy building trucks that cost that much. It's now entering business type of money to build these.
