Working in retail I see this a lot lol.
Sometimes it's from a lazy customer that changed there mind but didn't want to walk to the other end of the store to put it back, or lot of the time it from a thef that has a cartful of stuff and they decided not to chance it today and start dumping stuff in random places around the store until they get down to two or three items and then go up and pay for them to look like a innocent customer. Lol
I'm the guy who has to put it all back

If I decide I don't want something I give it to the cashier to restock. Never had one complain to me.

That's the better way to do it rather than leaving it on the shelf randomly.
Honestly it doesn't really bother me that much most of the time I just chuckle and think ohh boy that doesn't go there! I do get irritated when it's a parishable item like ice cream and it's been sitting out so long it's to late. I just hate to see stuff go to waste.
