Noise in my engine and New Hearing Aids

I have severe hearing loss. Couple of weeks ago I got New Aids from Miracle Ear. Went to my appointment for fitting, When done I go out to my Truck, Fire it Up and Holy Sh!t what’s that noise. Sounded like lifters swapping holes. As you may know I Just recently did a Cam and Head up grade from Trick Flow and New LS7 lifters from Michigan Motor Sports. Any way I got home and had a few people listen to this noise. 3 people listen to it All very qualified Mechanics , one even used a stethoscope , No One Could Hear the Noise. I said No Way, You guys are deafer than me. Turns out my New Aids were picking up my Roller Rockers and magnifying it in my ear like a very heavy rain storm If I turn the aids way down the noise is gone. I tried my old aids and No Noise. With old aids if my wife turned on the Vacuum it would turn my aids off

Re: Noise in my engine and New Hearing Aids

I've had tonal hearing loss for many years. Drivin' them race cars will do that to ya.. The VA fitted me with some high tech hearing aids about 6 years ago, and those previous frequencies that I couldn't hear were brought right up there.. I heard sounds I'd never heard before. Everyday sounds I hadn't heard in many years, I could now enjoy..

The problem was those confounded ear molds were not comfortable for me so after a few months, I quit wearing them.. A few years went by and the VA performed a follow-up hearing test.. They fitted me with the latest high tech hearing aids.. Now I hear all those engine noises, Dog walking across the floor, people talking in the movie theater. Sitting in the porch swing, I can hear the cows munching the grass, every little thing..

I'm not sure I like this new noisy life...

The Audiologists tend to set the initial volume adjustment too high. That is not good.

I had a friend that had new aids fitted and she would not wear them because all of the sounds were too loud. I told her to go back to the Audiologist and have him adjust them to half of what they were now and adjust them up slowly from there. She did that and after a couple of trips back to him they were adjusted correctly.

You do not want them that loud.

I have been wearing hearing aids in both ears since 1983. My current ones were purchased in 2016, and are noise cancelling, but they are not digital. They also turn off with the louder noises, including music when wearing headphones. I have been checking on new ones in the last week or two, both with local Audiologists and online. You can now buy them online and adjust them yourself with a phone app.

That’s exactly what she did. When I said that seems a bit loud, she said I’d like you to see how this works , if you need to you can turn it down, she showed me how. So because were just starting out with this new aids it’s like one step at a time The second appointment she tuned them in a LOT better but that’s when I hear my Truck. I go back next week for some more tweaks. It’s like tuning a car on the Dyno. It’s getting better. For what these cost I’m expecting a Lot

Yep, It is distracting if you are not used to hearing the small sounds. I don't like them that sensitive either. All of my aids have been fitted, in the ear type, and I haven't had any problems with discomfort from them.

A friend of mine got his through the VA and they were really good about working with him on getting them adjusted. His picked up so much background noise that it affected his equilibrium. Once they got the volume and sensitivity adjusted correctly he has had no more problems.

Good deal. Glad you are getting them dialed in.

The Gal I went to last week said that they have them from $3000 - $6000 per pair, depending on what you want. I don't need all of the Bluetooth stuff, although It might be nice for the TV.

Re: Noise in my engine and New Hearing Aids

I spent 6k on mine 8 years ago and for the last 7 they have sat on the desk in the case as a paperweight. Tinnitus is so bad it is like listening to a blender 24/7 365. Just learn to ignore it. They tell me implants are my only option but I spent my extra $250k on truck parts so just been learning to read lips.

Most women like the strong, silent type… Fortunately for me, my wife prefers the out-of-shape, mouthy type.
