stepside fender gaskets?

are there any gaskets or anything that i put between the bedsides and the stepside fenders? should i make some or do they just bolt directly to the side of the bed without anything? i ask this because the lip is where the stepside fender rusts out

Re: stepside fender gaskets?

They came factory with a strip caulk. 3M makes a black strip caulk that works well.

Good luck, Rg

Earlier models - till 59 I think - used welting. I plan to use it on my 70 when I restore it, seems less messy and probably more forgiving for a klutz like me.

That's what I used on my truck, as well.

Strip caulk the 3m black is what I used too . Hint to apply it is to let it sit in the sun to soften it . It will then flatten out much easier and also easier to use a plastic scraper to remove excess.

Re: stepside fender gaskets?

Most all the panels and assemblies from the factory were bare metal.
They used caulk and seam sealer to mitigate moisture intrusion. How well that worked? not so much over time.

You see a lot of corrosion above the upper windshield header both inside and outside because the sealer in the drip rail degrades and falls out over the course of time, and most people don't bother to repair it.

As far as the stepside fenders are concerned, the factory assembly manual specifies "plastic seam cement".
I assume the beds were assembled and then painted afterwards.

When I restored the bed on mine, I painted both the side panel and fender before assembly. I'm hoping that will help prevent corrosion between the two over time.
I do keep it in the garage, and I don't drive it in the rain if I can help it, but I do wash it regularly.
