Did they make Big 10's in 1985?

I think this was asked before, but I can't find the thread.

My 85 is a Heavy Half, but does that make it a Big 10?

Thanks.

Nope, no Big 10's in 85. I'm pretty sure 80 was the last year.

How do you know your 85 is a Heavy Half? There were no Heavy Half trucks in 85. 80 was the last year for the 1/2 Ton Heavy Duty Suspension.

It may be the same truck, but I don't think they put the Big 10 or Heavy Half stickers on them in 85.' I think that they stopped putting the stickers on around 79.' I'm not going on anything here but my memory.

They stopped making heavy halfs and big 10's when the federal emission gvwr break went from 6000lbs to 8000lbs. I believe that started on the '80 model year. You could get a half ton with a gvwr over 6000lbs without the heavy half or big 10 stickers, that may be what you have. My '77 has a 6000lb gvwr, but it's not a heavy half or big 10.

My GVWR is 5600.

My build sheet shows heavy duty springs (G50) and heavy duty brakes (J55).

As far as I know, all the big 10/heavy halfs were over 6000gvwr. But I'm not sure about the post-80 model ones. It's possible that a previous owner bought some heavy half stickers and put them on. I've seen alot of people buy Z-71 stickers and replace the 4x4 stickers with them on the 88-98 chevys.

I don't have any stickers or anything on the truck, I was just going off of the buildsheet.

My 85 came with G51 rear suspension which is the extra capacity, and J55 heavy duty brakes, but it's not a heavy half.

Ok then, the big 10 and heavy half was just a package that came with heavy duty springs to get your gvwr over 6000lbs. It also came with big 10 or heavy half stickers on the truck. Since your truck is less than 6000lbs, doesn't have the stickers, and is a post-80 model, it's very doubtful that it's either a heavy half or big 10.

EricS76...I just saw that you are from the Llano way. I drive through Llano at least once a month. My wifes family is from Mason. Any pics of the truck?

And I do believe that 1980 was the last year of the "BIG10" and "HEAVY HALF". Now they may have had those options avialabe but not as those specific models.

This is from.... http://www.chuckschevytruckpages.com/73-87specs.html

From 1973 - 1980 Chevy trucks had a 13 digit VIN#. From 1981 - 1987 Chevy Trucks used a 17 digit VIN#. If your 1973 - 1987 body style has a VIN# located on the dashboard, with 17 digits, then it is between 1981 and 1987 model. If your truck has the VIN# on the dash, but it is not 17 digits, then it is a 1979 or 1981 model. From 1973 - 1978 Chevy Trucks had the VIN# on a plate, mounted to the driver's door jamb. Your VIN# can also be found on the factory options decal, located in the glove box. The decal lists all the RPO's (Regular Production Options) your truck came from the factory equipped with. If the 4th digit of your VIN # is a 4, then your truck is a "Heavy Half" ton, also known as a "Big 10".

No picts get. I usually only drive it on the weekends. If you see a stock "santa fe tan" fleetside longbed that looks pretty rough, that's it. I haven't started the body work on it yet.
