How do you install sport mirrors?
Last week I mainly posted a question about the steel mounting plate location. Now I know the plate goes "behind" the door skin. Is the plate bolted to the door first, then the mirror and gasket screwed on?. If this is correct how the heck do you get your arm up in there with a wrench to attach the plate?

sport mirrors
I'm not sure how to do it as an add on but I am not near my truck now,but believe that the tapping plate is welded in the door from the factory.

I thought the sport mirrors were an option.

I had the arm style mirror, and on that pickup the plate was put up in through the door panel and the nuts were welded to the plate. The plate was not welded to the door. I think the sport mirrors use the same principle to attach.

Jim, it usually takes 2 people and a skinny long arm. Just have to have someone hold the plate up there while the other puts mirror and gasket on. They were not welded or screwed in place. alot of the time the older one was rusted in place.

Thanks Bill. That kind of makes sense since I didn't get any bolts with the mirrors. I just got 3 screws per mirror but they seemed too fat for the plate. I'll be doing this Sunday.

Jim, 1 other point not sure if you knew or not. there is 1" diffference in mounting point of mirrors. The RH one sets 1" farther to the rear of truck. that is the way they were from factory.

Thanks for that tip Bill. As long as I'm close I'll be happy.

I just got some backing plates off of a truck last week. Took the screws out that hold the arm on and the plates just fell.
I took measurements of the postition of them too. Drivers side is 6 3/4" from the door edge to the mirror arm and the passenger side is 8 1/4" Vertically the top of the mirror arm sits flush with the body line. |

I got sort of lucky when I put mine on, the factory holes were already there, I simply had to tap the body putty out of them. Also, when in the door, I removed some leaves and other crud that had fallen in there and found an original backing plate... too funny.
Think I did borrow the wife or child to hold turn the screwdriver to get the plate in place, while I held it through the door.

I just put new ones on my 67 SWB. I did not know that they were mounted in different spots. Mine are both 6 3/4 back from the door edge I lined them up inline with the vent window edge. I can see out of the passenger side good enough, I thought that they looked kinda far back the way they are, Not sure I would want to mount them any farther back. They are pretty easy to put on , it helps to have someone inside helping.
