Tailpipes Vs. Dumps: What's the sound difference

Currently I've got NO tailpipes. (Just have the piece of pipe on the mufflers that the factory puts on; about 4" long)
My question is, what kinda sound different am I gonna get, if I put on a pair of dumps (or turndowns, whichever you call em), OR if I get a set of tailpipes that exit before the rear tires (like Cochino12 has)
Right now, you really can't hear the exhaust, other than a big vibration. (More of a FEEL than a sound)

In case anyone wants to see what I mean...

I have two 3.5" tips exiting behind the rear wheels on my truck, with 40 Series Delta Flows. It has a mellow tone, but I wouldn't call it quiet. I'll run Hooker Aero chambers with a X-pipe and tips exiting out before the rear wheels after I get my new motor.

Those big 3.5" tips are what's making it sound that way. See, I'm just going to run 2.5" piping either dump or to the side. I was considering going with 3" tips if I go with the side exit, but I don't want it TOO loud.
There's a lifted 02 GMC Sierra here at my work, and whoever drives it, it dumb...they have a flowmaster on it (single in/dual out) and it has dumps...well, the dumps are CHROME, and they're literally 4" EACH! That thing is so stupidly loud it's not funny. But it's not like a rumbly-loud, it's more of just a tone-loud.

my friend had a lifted jeep with a 5.9. he has a flowmaster 40 with a turndown. it sounds good, but its not very clean. a turndown will hit the road, then your bed and so on till it exits your bed. overall they are louder than running a tail pipe, but it just doesnt sound as good IMO. my vote is for the tail pipe, but turndowns cost way less

OK, why though? Can you hear the cam "talking" better, with the side exit exhaust?

Bummer... that usually doesn't happen until they get older and have a lot more miles on them. Mine tells me he's tired sometimes, but considering changes, modifications and additions over the last couple of years, he's having to do a lot more push rod related work....

(not that he's complaining...)

I'm running a single 3" exhaust with a 40 series Flow, 3"inlet and dual 2.5 outlets dumped in front of the axle on my 83 Silverado with a 4/5 drop and I love the deep rumble have recieved some compliments on the sound and set off a few alarms but hey when your 51 and having a mid life crisis the louder the better

To me, the whole purpose of exhaust isn't how ghetto redneck loud you are, its the performance gain. Bolting on headers, dualing it out, and using high-flow mufflers increases HP and Torque like a lot, as in like 40%, AND it improves gas mileage. I personally prefer a low, deep, throaty sound that isn't too loud.

Everyone who hears my exhaust, always says "It just sounds like a bunch of air rushing out." EXCEPT when I got WOT...then it sounds like a damn prostocker! (LoL, I'm used to the sound now, but the first day I had them on, it sounded damn loud!)

my truck doesnt sit that low and its still plenty loud... since part of my exhaust is rusting i plan on redoing it soon and putting it out infront of the tires.. not sure if i will keep the flows for the time to save some $$ or go with Aero Chambers....

My buddies decided to pull my muffler off today -- lemme tell ya -- Straight pipe is significantly louder than my 3.5" in with dual 2.5" out with turndowns attached straight to the muffler.... The truck sounds fairly good with the muffler on, esspecially at WOT, but is a bit quieter than I'd like when I am just cruising. I guess I'll run to Parts Source, buy a set of Aerochambers, and some 2.5" pipe and put my duals on this weekend...

i have dual flowmasters(swap meet, 5 bucks for both! not a clue what they are) anyways, i had daul 3inch turn downs, well one day i noticed that the truck soudned not really louder but had alot more bass, i looked udner and one of my turn downs had fallen off, we also had the turn downs pointed at a 45 towards the drive shaft to even out the sound what not, i prefer no turn downs, but thats just me.

I just finished installing a full length exhaust setup on my truck, making use of half my dual exhaust kit...

It doesn't drone at all at an idle anymore, and has a much throatier / less airy tone to it, I like it!

I have true duals with a H pipe and 50 series Delta FLows dumped before the axle. I think it sounds good. Driving through a parking lot it will set off car alarms.

My buddy swapped out his steel duals for stainless duals from the headers and with 3" tailpipes on his 34 rod. Man what a difference. He says the stainless makes a much nicer sound. He said if I just change my tailpipes from steel to stainless I will get that throatier "rodder" sound that street rods and muscle cars have.

I am going to try that on my Blazer.

I run 40 series flowmasters ,h-pipe true duals with no cats, 2.5" pipe alll the way out the rear bumper. Myself I like the noise out the tailpipe and not under the truck.
