Thumbs up Adding Power steering

What a great website!!! I'm new here so please be kind! Can anyone tell me what I need to do to add power steering to my 72 C10 with 6 cyl. 3-speed??
The truck has just 30k miles on it and is pretty tight, but at my advancing age and my growing laziness I am getting tired!
Could the V-8 pump and box be used on this truck??

First and most important...welcome to the board. What part of the world do you call home?

As for your Q, the hard part is coming up with the brackets from what I understand. I would guess 9And that's all it is is a guess) that you could use the v-8 pump, as log as it fit in the brackets you get. The steering gear box will be the same from 1/2 ton to one ton regardless of engine. (Talkin 2 wheel drive...i have no clue on the 4X4 trucks) So you could get a power steering pump off any 69 - 72 and it'll bolt right up. You can also use the 73 - about 80 and it's a bolt on, but I am unsure of what arm you'd need. The later box will give you a variable rate steering which is cool.
Again, welcome to the board, check it all out, tons of info of everything you wanted to know, everything you already forgot, and lots of ideas that'll make you turn wrenches more than intended.

Thanks for the welcome! I'm from Sheboygan, Wi. I can probably come up with a set-up from a 71-72 4x4 with V-8 Auto. Chances are the price will be right(read that as REALLY cheap) so I was hoping for an easy exchange(Remember the Lazy part!)

The brackets will be useless for your engine...but good selling/trading material, esp if they are the correct brackets for a 69 - 72 engine, and not the later set up.

You need to get the bracket/pump/pulley set that will line up with your eng pulleys. There were several different setups. Your crank damper/pulley must have at least two grooves, with the proper spacing.
As an example: Here is a complete system (this system is already sold and it was a real hard to find 292). When all of this comes off the same engine, I can be sure everything lines up, otherwise I have to put individual pieces on a motor to insure they fit. You can piece it together, but as several guys on here will tell you, it often won't match your pulleys.
I may have one pump w/brackets that will line up with one of the grooves on our 6 cyl engines.

Welcome! I finished this very project today on my 70 C10, 250 3 spd.You need a steering box from another truck, grab the coupling shaft too cause its diff size than one for a manual box. I got a pump & bracket from Pickmup(Frank), bracket fit fine but pump no pump. Went & got another used one locally & it worked. Had to use a double groove alternator pulley & water pump pulley. Both new belts as alt is moved in a little so old belt is too long. I used a 38 inch long belt for alt & 50 inch for P/S, normal belts for 70 C10 w/ps. Man, is it nice, especially in traffic or parking!!! Brian

Welcome aboard from Texas
You have come to the right place to get all you questions answered about you truck.

That is some pretty low miles for that truck, Less than a thousand a year.

Ps

Welcome from Fall River (25 miles N. of Madison). The 4x4 box won't work. Sorry. Like PICKMUP said, you'll need a 6 cyl. pump. (It's the brackets that are different), and a 2WD box. The boxes are easy to find. I have 3 of them down here. There was a pump on the parts board earlier in the week, but is probably sold by now...............Zoomy

pump

Over in the parts section, PICKMUP has the pump you need. I probably have the pulley. Definitely have the box. NAPA has the lines. There you go ! Don't wait too long. 6 cylinder parts go fast on the board.

You will need to know if your engine is a 250 or 292 because the brackets are different for each engine.
