rear end question

I have a 1972 cheyenne super 3/4 ton. from what I have read I have either the ho72 or ho52 rear. it is howling and I am told to replace oit with a late model rear as the brakes I have now will bolt on. what year 14 bolt gm rear can I use???

I don't think the brakes are the same between your rearend and a 14 bolt.

Wouldn't it just be easier to swap out another center section? Pull the axles out just a bit, unbolt the driveshaft, unbolt the centersection and it is out. You won't even have to mess with the brakes that way. I'd think you should be able to find another used center section since they used them for years way before 1970. Do be carefull when dropping the center section out as it is very heavy.

I agree that would be easier. the trick is I want to put in a detroit locker posi rear. does anyone have one around? Also is it the same center section if it is a ho52 or ho72?

It is the same center section. Detroit Lockers can be found around. Most of the time people or junkyards don't know what they have. Learn how to check them and don't forget to check the older trucks. My last two came out of 65-66 Chevy trucks.

So, if the whole center section is changed does that mean everything doesn't have to be re-aligned like it would if new ring and pinion were installed? I don't know much about rear ends thats why I'm asking.

That is correct. The ring and pinion set up would not be affected.

However, installing a locker out of one into anther is not a huge deal either. So even if you find a locker where the gear teeth are rusty or wrong gear ratio I would still get it.

Thats good to know Dean. I'd like to swap my 410 posi for something more hiway friendly, glad to know I can do it without worrying about ring/pinion setup.

I don't think you will find anything more highway friendly for that rearend. There were a few 3.90 ratio aftermarket ones, but rare. Sorry

mine has a 10 bolt cover, 4.10 tag and on the axle housing has a "60" cast in it. can anyone post a pic of a ho52 to verify that is what I am dealing with. The cover is not perfectly round like I am told a ho72 is.


I forgot I didn't change the ujoints. that will happen saterday and hopefully stop all of the winning noise as i drive. the faster i go the louder it whines and man it is loud neadless to say i quit driving it around.

if your truck is a factory big block truck than it has a dana 60.

Well Dean that just ain't good at all.

I'd like to keep the 8 lug and big drums, is there a different rear end with a higher ratio that I can just swap out?

the big blocks trucks came with a 3.54 didn't they? I'm pretty sure big block didn't mean automatily dgetting a dana either.
I think there was one for sale on the parts board maybe?
You would have the HO52 or dana, the HO72 is under one ton trucks only. They only came with leaf spring perches and yours is probably coil.
I'll see if I can find a pic of dana/eaton covers. Your drawinf makes me think dana.

Just from the drawing its a Dana 60, the 52 is a perfectly round rear cover. I have a trailer with a full floater Dana 60 axle under it and looks exactly like what the drawing looks like. Lol, the rear itself is worth far more than what I paid for the trailer, $35.

If Therear Is Determined The Problem After Ujoints I Have A Uncle Who Had A 72 3/4 That Was Wrecked And He Turned It Into A Trailer That Hasn't Moved For Years. I Could Be Lucky If He Wants Help Cleaning Out His Yard.

Also If It Is A Dana60 Is That A Stock 72 Rear And What Size Is It 10" 9.5"??

ANOTHER CLUE AS TO WHAT YEAR /TYPE REAR END i HAVE. IT HAS THE OUTSIDE BOLTS OF A FLOATING AXLE, BUT WHEN i FIXED MY BRAKES THIS WEEKEND I PULLED THE WHEEL OFF AND THEN THE DRUM WITHOUT HAVING TO PULL THE AXLE LIKE MY DAD'S 70 1TON. IS THIS COMMON FOR A 3/4 TON?

Yep on the dana 60 rears the drums come off without removing the hubs and axles. As far as I know the dana 60 w/ 3.54 gears backed the bigblock 3/4 ton 2wd trucks. The dana 60 has a 9.75" ring gear. The h052/H072 are a little under 10.5".

1981 K30, 350/465/205 dana 60 and dually 14 bolt. Has a G80, and a flat bed. Going to replace the flat bed.

1985 K20, 350/400/208 10 bolt and SF 14 bolt. I wonder where I can find some 1 tons. Hmmmmm

I know this , well because it used to be mine...lol Anyway, I have a Dana 60, 4:10 down here if you can find one up there. What happened to the one under the truck anyway?
