Re: 1950 Chevy 3600 - Bumper Punchin'

I have a lot of clean up to do. I'll take some before and after shots of what it can do.

The down side is that they are $5-$12 per disk depending on grit and thickness. I believe the brand of disk that bob suggested is Pearl Disk. I'm having a hard time finding them locally, so I picked up a couple different brands to give them each a shot.

As i learned with cut off wheels, it's a good idea to try a couple brands and understand the characteristics of them, then select one brand to stick with. Then you know what to expect when you get into a job and/or the cost of supplies.

I buy them at the local harbor freight store.. You get a 4 pack for $6.00... They hold up pretty well!

Re: 1950 Chevy 3600 - Bumper Punchin'

i able fell over when i saw the price on the ones Fastenal gets... $12 for one. Granted, it was thick, and looked like it would hold up for a long time. Just can't see spending that much. I may have to do a mini review on them as I play with them.

Re: 1950 Chevy 3600 - Bumper Punchin'

I buy mine from Home depot. They have been the cheapest and they last quite a long time. Just thought i would join the conversation a little late.

Josh

Ps.. Its looking sweet!!!!

Looking good Levi. You might try a welding shop like airgas or linweld. They will have them in a big box, just not sure on pricing, i get mine from work. They are the best wheel for smoothing up welds. I would use a small wire wheel cup for the frame. Keep up the good work.

Re: 1950 Chevy 3600 - Bumper Punchin'

good progress this weekend, but nothing really picture worthy. got the brake pedal, booster and MC installed, plug wires, water pump and carb on, rear frame is boxed, back window is in and the front shocks are done. Also started in on the wiring harness and got the steering column mocked up and painted.

just ordered what should be my last big round of parts from speedway motors, and found some 5" gauges on ebay.

Also try Shoppers Supply on NE 14th for flap wheels. Also, when you get to the point of needing some welding done, load it up and bring it to Baxter and we can get it welded up. It is looking really good. I totally understand about the 20 80 scenario. That is where I'm at on the vette and it is a pita.

Re: 1950 Chevy 3600 - Bumper Punchin'

Not much to say here other than things are starting to come together. My wife even said tonight, "it's starting to look like a truck again."

couldn't of said it better myself.

and the money shot...

clearance shouldn't be an issue up front since the front tires will be about 1.5" taller than these rollers. I also test fitted the rear, and it looks like with a 1" bump stop, i should be about level.

I still think it's realistic that it'll be there. Just need a few stars to align and it'll be there for sure. Oh, i did add a calendar to my garage and am marking off the days as they pass...

thanks for the comments on the rear. This being my first custom 4 link, i've learned a lot, and am happy with how it turned out. I do wish i could lay some cleaner welds though. Not to worried though. I have plans for some customer sheetmetal work to cover it all up. should look pretty trick when done.

Do you plan to gusset or reinforce the upper bag mounts any? I'm just curious because they will have a lot of weight riding on them and i'd hate so see them bend or break.

ahh. it looked huge to me... I put a 17 gal one in my off-roader, but it's tall and skinny (7" wide) and sunk into the floor 6"...
