That one is set up like the one I found last summer,except this one has a 427 and the one I was looking at was a 366.

if you are talking about mine...... it is listed as 25,500 (#19,200 Eaton 2 speed rear, #11,000 front) and also says Max is 32,000 with "optional" equipment.

Interesting. The GVW states 25,500 therefore it would be under CDL and it has Air Brakes. I only saw one other truck (that I verified anyway) that had Air Brakes and was under CDL.

The other interesting thing is that even though the GVW is 25,500, the Axels add up the 27,500. I had a truck like that once. I had a '67 GMC 7500 and the Axels added up to 31,000 but the GVW was stamped 27,500. Either way that truck was over CDL, even though I owned it in the days before CDL. My Chauffeurs license covered it back then.

That Fact had NOT escaped my notice.... though at one time Alaska used to state anything with air required a road test(air specific) and a cdl though I find no mention of that now...

intersting factoid.... i found weight slips from the DOT scales in the glove box when I brought her home... she had cleared the scales at over 40,000 was owned by a cement and block company )

Although others have disputed it, I contacted Virginia DMV twice about a truck under CDL having Air Brakes and one reply by E-mail was a lengthy and legally "Yes, it is OK". The other was a woman on the phone who finally said "I don't care what kind of Brakes you have, as long as it is under CDL, you don't need a special license to drive it"!!

I would give your local DMV a call though to make sure that you are on the right side of the law. E-mail might be better as you would have something to copy to keep in the truck with you, in case you need it. In some cases, I'm not even sure the law knows what is what.

I bet if it had a pickup bed no one would say a thing, if it ends up with a holmes wrecker I bet i get to argue the point quite often too ;-)

Reminds me of the conversation I had over the phone with the DOT boys from the scale... there is one on the highway between my house and my work... so I called to ask if I would have to stop at the scales... since it was not for hire and a personal vehicle.... they said there are no personal vehicles that big.... I asked " hey I have a C60 you know like a two and half ton truck, that I want to use as my daily driver.... they said yes I would have to stop at the scales, I said "even if it is just my own car" and they said... "no one would do that" it would be stupid to drive a truck to work and back.

For a while I was driving my '67 GMC 7500 to work. That truck also had Air Brakes. It was fun and really didn't cost that much more.

I asked the same thing about my '64 C-30 on the Interstate. As the sign says "All Trucks". I wanted to know where they drew the line at. They said if I was empty, no problem just pass by. But I was fully loaded, it's best to stop. I only had to pull in once and they gave me the green light just as I rolled up to the scale.

Talk about driving big trucks, I once took the '71 GMC 9500 I used to drive for a cruise. I was headed to the docks to pick up a full load of lumber. Just before I was to pull in, it was coffee break time and I didn't want to miss it. It was near a nice ocean side town that I wasn't too familiar with and tried to find a resturant or donut shop. I hit a side road that looked good and the more I drove the more I ended up in a nice ocean side community. No donut shop or nothing no where. I just converted my time into a cruise instead. One of the best coffee breaks I ever took.

you sound as though you have spent some "quality time" behind Detroit Diesels, can the be made liveable, my only experience with them has been in log skidders and they made you want to gouge your earballs out after an hour or so..... took a while in the evening for your nerves to stop jangling...... that being said ..... I WANT one... thinking a nice 4-53 in this C-60 at some point... IF it could be made civil enough to live with on the road. opinions ?

A 4-53 would be a good choice for your C-60. My '67 7500 had a 6V-53. I got bit by the Detroit bug when I was about 18. They are loud alright, and most poeple either love them or hate them. Once I sold my 7500, I was without one, till I realized that John Deere put one in one of their Farm Tractors. I was looking for another tractor anyway and was lucky enough to find one close to exactly what I was looking for. Back in '99 I bought a '59 John Deere 435 that has a 2-53 Detroit. Any time I need a Detroit kick, I just fire it up. I usually put it to work a couple of times a month anyway.

I like the Trolley Brake. Do you have your Trans out?

trans and engine are both out, unfortunately it came that way, they busted the shift tower on the old spicer somehow and I dont even have all the pieces. Big arse ddouble disc clutch on this thing. I would love to come across a resonbly priced Browny to go behind my 5 speed. twin stick is just cool. thinking on trying to fab a Stick ( like a transfer case) for the PTO. when it comes to shifters more is better..... I want to be able to put everythign in neutral and park it in an intersection go get coffeee and have no one figure out how to move it before I get back!

Speaking of DOT saying "no one would use a truck that big for personal use"...they never saw a toter home? I've seen some mighty big ones and they're registered as RVs...like combinations as long as any commercial semi. Guy's in the antique truck crowd drive cross country to shows and are all "not for hire". Just because Smokey doesn't want to do it doesn't mean no one else does. I guess their narrow minded thinking comes from spending their day thinking "by the book".

Dan, That's OK, you will now have room for that Detroit you are talking about.

A 5 X 3 would be a good combination behind a 4-53. Even though I'm a 10-Speed Road Ranger fan, I also wouldn't mind having Twin Sticks.

Junkyard tour, found these ladies.... Pretty rough, but onc the pride of the fleet.... 427, tandem, twin stick, Custom. The other has a nice PTO winch with a three speed aux transmission, going back in the spring to investigate.

The first GMC must have been some truck when it was new, air brakes and all.

The other GMC, going by the grille, is a '66.

Here is my contribution to this thread. I picked this up last week about 30 miles from home. It is a 71' GMC 6500 with a really good running 427, 5 speed, 2 speed rear, and air brakes. The previous owner passed away a few years ago and it looks like he took pretty good care of it. I plan on using it to pull my 32' GN trailer.

I still have to get the title transferred, change all the fluids, and clean it up good. I am curious as to what kinda mileage I can expect though. It has 6.50 gears on the high side and 42" tall 10.00-20s which should work out to 3400 rpm at 65 mph. I'm hoping to average 7 mpg towing approximately 16,000 lbs. Anyone think that kinda mileage is possible on long trips if driven right?

Interesting truck. I'm not really up on Big Blocks in trucks, but I would say that 7 MPG would be reasonable, especially if you give it a good Super Tune. I like the words "driven right". That can make a big difference in MPG. Keep up the revs in all gears, but also be light on the gas. Split shifting the Rear will also help, especially pulling loads up hill.

I sure like that truck. Ans,what a classy combo that will be pulling a camper. I can't say from experience,but 7 mpg doesn't sound off to me.I can only compare with what you say about rpm @ 65 compared to my 3/4t 4wd that is at that same rpm at 65. It gets 12.5,maybe less going over 60,but it's much lighter. So,I'd guess 7 would be possible.
