Re: My own build thread

I'm almost regretting color sanding...
After color sanding

This is a lot of work for one person. Took me almost a whole day to do half the truck... But it looks really nice, I guess its worth it... Haha!
After buffing.

Re: My own build thread

A few weeks of color sanding definitely suck but the payoff is sooooooo going to be worth it.

Re: My own build thread

Thanks sir! Ya all the little things help make the end product really nice. I will hate every step of this but in the end it will be worth it! Can't wait to hear it run again that's for sure. I just hope I can get it together before the snow comes but it seems to be here a lot earlier than most years. It was 32 this morning... Not looking good that's for sure.

Love the colors, the stance and the color sanding will pay off in the end

Dude I am totally on the same sheet as you with the weather!!
Crazy that last year at this time we had almost 2 feet of snow and temps were getting below zero already.
I told a buddy this morning I am hoping for the shortest, and warmest winter in history this year (my 4th winter up here in central Alaska).

Sorry for the noob question but what is color sanding, and how do you do it?

Re: My own build thread

Color sanding is when you sand and buff "polish" the clear coat. It would take me forever to explain but here is a good link on how to do it.
http://youtu.be/5hzQyaRof4k
This guy has a whole color sanding series that is very well explained.
In short you sand the clear coat with fine grit sand paper until the paint is super flat. Then you take a buffer and polish the clear until it's really shiny. There are a lot of techniques and its a fairly difficult thing to do correctly. Once you watch the videos you'll understand. I'm not trying to not answer you it's just much easier if you want to learn how to watch this guy. Just make sure you do what he says and you'll be fine. Just please don't do this to a normal car. Only a freshly painted car that you know has at least 3-7 coats of clear. You can burn through the clear if you aren't careful.

Re: My own build thread

The rest of the truck is sanded. Going to buff it all out tomorrow. I can't wait to get it out in the sun and see what it looks like. I'm even more excited to bolt on the bumpers and grill.

Re: My own build thread

I did get it all buffed out but it was too late to get it out in the sun when I finished but here's a crappy picture.

I still have to use some swirl remover but the hard part is mostly finished. If I have time tonight I will finish using the swirl remover and see if I can get the bumper on for a pic.

Re: My own build thread

Thanks! You wouldn't believe the amount of people that have told me the same thing. Honestly, it's kind of hard to pick a color that doesn't look good. Once they are all painted they usually all look nice unless you pick some really strange colors.

Re: My own build thread

I finish the majority of the color sanding and took some pictures. I didn't have anyone to help me with the bumpers so that will have to wait.
Here's a few shots, I still need to wax it but I'm pretty happy with it.

That color and finish is nothing short of spectacular! I know how much misery it takes to get there, but it is so worth it in the end!! Great job.
