I would recomend flipping your axle. the previous owner did this drop and it would change ride height when it had a full tank of gas. flipped axle will provide a nice drop and still hold the weight of the top and any passengers better.

I saw this one on CL and thought is was a good deal. Nobody has messed with it so you have a fresh palette to start with. Some nice rims will make it look great.

I just bought a 77 GMC 2wd blazer ....project , but shouldnt be horrible , no pics at this moment but I will see what I can come up with. Has anyone done a flip kit on one of these....? Does it have to be notched....?

If you do a flip kit you will want a notch.

X3.....no way around it. and plan on shock extenders. they will correct the shock angle. after a flip it causes the shocks to lay at 30 degrees and they wont work anymore. the extenders angle them back verticle

x4 and I can vouch for the rear shocks sucking after a flip kit.. I'm not going to spend any money on extenders just because it's going to be bagged soon enough. Have the front dropmember kit now just need to get all the other parts for it..

I bought this one yesterday. All stock (except for the motor was replaced in 97') from the original owner and in great shape. Will make a good family truck. I plan to lower it some, probably add 20's and drive it for a really long time : )

I made my own flip kit using another pair of universal spring perches welded to the axle tubes and I am NOT running a C-notch kit and I have yet to have the axle tubes touch the frame. I don't even have bump stops. During my 2wd conversion I placed the rear hangers 4" further back than stock to allow me to use 56" long springs from a 3/4 ton (with a few leafs removed), stock Blazers have 52" length springs.

I am not saying a C-notch kit isn't a good idea, but it might not be required.

That's very good info, but that wasn't really what he was asking. If you just flip the rear end. You WILL need a c notch. If you raise it back a couple of inches somehow, then you might get by without the notch.

Not meaning to argue dude, but he asked if he needed a c-notch after a flip kit. How is that not what he is asking?

I answered no because I have an axle flip AND I do not have a c-notch and it works just fine (its my daily-driver too).

It all depends on his rear springs if they are already sagging from age and/or if they have been replaced with a higher spring rate spring pack, yet the ride height was unchanged.

You also don't have stock springs. It's like comparing apples to oranges. I'm not trying to argue either, but I guarantee if you flip the axle on a blazer with stock springs you will need a notch. Which is what he asked.
Just would hate for someone to go to the trouble to do a flip kit thinking that he could use it without a notch, then have to change more parts to get it to a point where it would work.

Even with a notch my axle tube hits frame rails on a decent bump.. That is another reason why I'm in the process of getting parts to bag the truck. I need a larger notch and since I need to cut th e floor anyways might as well go all the way..

Dude, a 4" longer top leaf doesn't do ANYTHING to the ride height of the truck or give the suspension any more leway before the axle hits the frame if the arch is the same as a shorter spring (which in my case the 56" top spring had LESS of a arch than the factory 52" top spring).

The only advantage in my case for the longer top spring is a little more stiffness while actaully providing a better ride quality which is why GM switched ALL full size trucks to a rear 56" top spring with the new body style in '88 ('92 on K5/Burbs).

A longer spring generally will lift the truck because the shackle has to rotate back further. Causing the pivot to be lower in relation to the frame. Causing the truck to sit higher.

Umm. I guess you missed the part in my original reply (above) where alI stated I MOVED THE REAR HANGERS 4" BACK ON THE FRAME. So the shackles are exactly where they should be when the truck is at its resting ride height.

You are correct. I did miss that. But that even furthermore enforces th point I was trying to make. Your blazer is nothing like his. Different length springs and relocated hangers.
And it isn't my first rodeo either I've had 10 square body 2wd blazers. 6 of those had flip kits, so in response to the question that was asked, Yes you will need a notch.......unless you want to change a bunch of stufff, in which case you may not need it. But if you put on a 6" suspension lift you won't need one either, but that wasn't the question was it?

ok, i have a 78 2wd blz and i pulled 2 leafs. it gave me 4 inches of drop and put me on the bump stops. i took the bumpstops out and i have 2 1/2 inches before i hit frame. if a flip gives you 5 inches of drop then that would leave 1 1/2 inches. now that may be enough clearance to drive it IF the shocks have been addressed angle wise and shorter shocks (like putting front shocks in the rear) were put in...and deal with an occasional bottom out and hit to the frame. if you have nicer roads in your area then this would cause you to think you dont need a c-notch.


if you havent addressed the shock issue, there is no way it's not going to hit as your leafsprings are going to bounce so much that it will touch on big bumps. to the guy who is asking....do the flip and install some extenders with stock front shocks and you might be ok, but make sure you can do the c-notch install if you need to later, cause chances are you'll end up wanting one.
