Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!

Nice progress J!

Would you mind getting an upclose shot of the tach wiring opening next to the wiring harness on the firewall? And if possible, with a tape measure showing the diameter of the opening? I'm trying to determine the correct dimple for a factory wiring harness.

Thanks buddy!

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!

A few turned into several....

Here you go...

Hole itself is 11/16" (3/4") and is slightly dimpled in towards the inside of the cab

11/16" from the E-brake hole edge

and 5/8" from the main wiring harness connector hole

It did Royally stink

I talked with a guy today who does affordable sandblasting. I'm going to get him to do the underside of the cab, any areas I missed with my work, the bed (at least the underside) and the complete frame/all components

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!

From what I can tell from the pictures, it's the 3rd dimple from the bottom correct?

Not sure on that, but it's basically centered between the e-brake and the wiring block. There is only one close to the center so that'll be the one

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!

Talked to another person about sandblasting and had another email me....might be able to start a bidding war

Hope to get it done in the next week so I can get Jason started on the rust repair. He's ready for me now.

Spending loads of money on the truck right now. I'm gonna end up going at least a few thousand over budget but it's going to be much nicer because of that. Found NOS parts I couldn't pass up and some great original pieces for my engine brackets.....

Plus, the interior is way over budget but it's going to be amazing!!!

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!

Working on a Tach/vac/speedwarning dash right now (to sell). Sanded and painted the outer tin today. Putting it together tonight. Still waiting on a few parts. Hopefully it'll pay for part of my extra's

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!

Picked up the door and fenders from Greyhound yesterday. They look great. Gotta few holes to fill (mirrors/fender mounted antennas) but they're already at Jason's shop to get that done. Going to drop off some other parts there today and I'll grab some pictures of them.

Also the frame and cab are going to the sandblaster Sunday afternoon hopefully. After that's done it's on to Jason's and the project is really going to pick up some steam!

Thanks, the build should take a huge leap forward starting Sunday and I'll make steady progress on it after that. With it in Jason's shop I not only have room, I also have air, air tools, a huge mechanics box full of tools, huge press, grinders, drill press, etc etc etc....

oh...and a 2 post lift....that kinda helps

And he lets me use all of it as part of the deal. I just replace any grinder discs/sandpaper/welding gas and everything else is mine to use.

Here are the RUST FREE fenders and passenger door after blasting

And my latest part's score....and NOS cargo light lens. Ordering all the other lenses NOS today and I have t3 headlights so I'll have all NOS lights on the truck

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!

NICE! This might be a stupid question, but why did you wire wheel the cab if it was getting blasted? Was that just to make it quicker for the blaster and have less chance he could warp the panels? Easier for him so it was cheaper?
Not trying to sound stupid, just curious.

Not a stupid question at all. I was getting prices from 100+ an hour and people telling me it would take two to three days to do the cab, bed and frame (2400)
Put a craigslist ad looking and finally had a couple bites at reasonable prices and can pick up/drop off to make it easier.

Part was to avoid warpage like on the roof skin, and part was to save money too. The bottom of the cab is tough to get clean (Done it before and it took a day by itself) On the rest of it I saved myself about 600-800 by doing it myself (with my BIL's help)

I'm going to ask them to hit a few of the tight spots while they have the cab so I make sure I got it all too.

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!

Man, restoring these trucks to show quality is EXPENSIVE!!!

I already have spent more on this truck than I did restoring my blazer.....including the cost of the blazer!

And I have a WAYS to go...

.....but it should be worth triple the blazer when completed

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!

OK, I got ya, I figured it was to cut down on warpage and cost. Definately going to be beyond show quality when done. I think I would have a VERY hard time selling it!!

Thanks. I am confident it will turn out great between the awesome truck with all its' options, a great welder, fab guy and body man helping me, an awesome painter spraying the truck, and NOS and better than new parts going on it.

Finished my speedwarning so I can buy more parts soon

Triple what the blazer was? Wow, I thought that turned out to be high end value. What did it sell at? You have some nice parts going into this build. Love the gage pack. It should sell quick.

Thanks!

The blazer I actually sold for 16. I needed to sell it fast at the time...I overextended myself at the end to get it finished and had bills to pay I hadn't even finished it when I sold it....but I still should have put it on ebay/mautofied/autotrader. Another blazer of similar quality sold for 30K on ebay right after I had accepted the new owner's offer for mine.

I've been told by several of the knowledgeable guys on here and CSM that with my parts and plans (frame off/detailed chassis/professional paint/and the highly optioned-highly desireable truck it is) my truck should be in the 40-50K category when completed.....and could go higher.

CSM not too long ago sold one of his SWB BB Super trucks for 69K...

Your truck is looking good. I have seen a few trucks over here on the left coast going for $30-$40k. A buddy of mine sold his last two for close to 30k and they were older resto's. Right now he is looking at buying a 72 SWB super, 63,000 original mile, light olive and white, the seller is asking 20k. I thought it was a good deal. It is a very nice clean truck. Keep up the good work.

That's where I'm aiming is 30-40 and hoping for more

I have not seen many sell on ebay for much more but recently saw one over 40 that didn't hit reserve but had LOTS of interest...
