I think that is pretty applicable to most of us!

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
here are pictures of how to check it .
remember the first thing to do is make shore the two u joints are lined up ! I lay the driveshaft on a flat surface to check this . then do like in picture #1 first check to see that the space between the drive shaft and the square are even all the way down . then check it from the other side also. then check it like picture # 2 and #3 to see that the end cap looks spaced even when checked from both sides . if it looks even all 4 ways then make 1 tack weld and check it all 4 ways again . in picture #2 the square was not against the driveshaft like it should be I couldn't hold the square and take the picture at the same time. if it is good make a second tack weld on the other side . check it again to make shore it didn't move and if its all good then finish welding it. try to make your weld even size all the way around. if you get a fat spot in your weld then grind that spot to make it similar size to the rest of the weld. |

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
Ok thanks for the pics.
Today I brought my yokes to school and pressed the ujoint out. It turns out there was plastic injected into the little holes in the yoke to hold the ujoint in so I heated it with a torch to melt it out then I pressed it out. I'm leaving to Maui today for a week but I'll be sure to post when I return.

Saw this today at a beach in Maui. 1966 custom camper (badges removed when painted) with a 283 3 on the tree original interior and original bed wood, owned by a surfer.

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
Just got back this morning and got busy. Finished off the sectioning of the front fender but then found some more rust in the lip.
Here it is cut out |

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
take your tires off your wheels when you sand blast them. you can manipulate the wheel in a cabinet alot better then you can a wheel with the tire on plus you dont want to accidently hit your rubber then your sol on the tires. plus when you paint them it will make it that much easier to paint the whole wheel or powder coat or what have you. the truck looks awesome im tuned in!

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
Thanks Jim, I plan on welding the yoke on today using the instructions you gave me, I'll check that its square many times then I'll put a couple tack welds and if it's still perfectly square I'll keep welding and checking.

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
Welded my driveshaft up today. Checked over and over to make sure it was square and tack welded it, checked more and finished up the weld. I'll pick up a new ujoint and put the driveshaft in tomorrow or the next day. I think it'll work just fine.

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
Also did some more work on the tailgate. I shortened the cables about 3". The bottom one hadn't been done when I took the pic

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
Then I made some little brackets out of angle iron and drilled a hole in them and welded them to the gate. I then bolted the cables to the bracket with a bolt and two nuts and tightened them together so the cable can spin freely.
