Drove the truck to breakfast and stopped at Tractor Supply to pickup birdseed. Saw this '63.

Post Out And About

That's a lovely picture ! .

I was in Eagle Rock and spotted a 1937 Chevy pickup, it looked in decent shape apart from the fake patina B.S. they did to it .

Does anyone know if Chevy made a four speed trans that would fit the same space as the three speed I have now.

Thanks Nate. What years would I look for?
Maybe you can tell me this, why is my truck popping out of third gear on deceleration?

Post Tranny Woes

Because the counter shaft (cluster) gear is out of alignment .

You'd best take it apart A.S.A.P. and see what's what, quite often the counter shaft proper is badly worn .

I saw a '37 once that they just kept driving it low on oil and the cluster gear wore about 1/4" (!) into the case ruining it .

Your truck has a *very* light duty cluster gear, it has a bronze bushing in it and this wearers .

Also the cluster gear needs to be shimmed as it travels back and forth as you load and unload the gearbox ~ this is why it pops out on decel .

The _GOOD_ news is : this gear we re designed my GM for the 1941 year model so it has proper needle typ roller bearings that fit right into your earlier tranny .

Best bet is to find a takeout tranny from a Hot Rodder ~ they're worthless and so usually cheap or free so GET ONE and read it, lots of good info and you'll
see how simple and easy it is .

Yes, YOU at home can overhaul this simple gearbox with simple tools .

The four speed version you're wondering about has a compound low first gear that only moves the vehicle at walking speeds ~ quite handy on the farm amd in commercial service .

It has a flimsy little stamped sheet metal lever on the right side of the gearchange lever, this lifts up a thin rod going into the gearbox and disables the reverse lockout .

The trannies up through the late 1940's are generally interchangeable ~ all you needs do is count the input and output slines and you're golden .

I forget where you're located but I still see these trannies in Auto Jumbles .

Before you pay for another one, COUNT THE TEETH ! .

It's possible and likely that passenger car cluster gear and shaft will fit .

I ass-U-me you have a shop manual ? .

If not they're dirt cheap new and often free or close to when used and oily, the information therein doesn't change .

If you decide t buy another tranny, new. used or "rebuilt" (?) Never, EVER let the old tranny out of your sight until the job is done and you're 1.000% happy .

Many have failed to heed this simple advice, every one who did regrets it forevermore .

(it's about time my useless decades out of date experience comes in handy)

Need more info on this 3-speed. What year, length, all the info off the transmission case and casting numbers...It appears that a New Process 435 would fit.

Smile Helping Hands

You're most welcome .

Long, long ago I too needed to ask questions and about 1/2 of the old guys flat refused to share their hard won knowledge & experience .

This is foolish to the extreme .

I have tips for the Oakie Bushing and getting the tranny back in too ~ in my youth your rig was just another $75 work truck wheezing up to the pumps .

Thanks ,but if you go back to page 3 post 66-68 and post 236 on this page you will see which trans I am working with and I want something that is a bolt in replacement. I don't want to have to change the torque tube or anything else about the truck.

Pops out of 3rd gear? Sounds like it's time for an LS-swap!

Sorry. I'm beginning to think I've been programmed

Yeah yeah, just kidding. Glad you found another transmission that will go right in. You don't need granny gear anyway.

Getting into newer years, my buddy has a '55 1st Design, original 6cyl/3spd. I gave him a 3spd out of a '72 that bolted right in on that first year open driveshaft. Now he has full-syncro 1st

I do the same... "LS it" is the new "Swap in a small block". My first pickup in 1975 was a '58 283 3spd, But I bolted in a '65 Impala Muncie 4 spd. I sure did like that truck.
