It sure is, it has metal dust in the paint. you paint it on, then flat it off slightly to expose the dust then spray with a water based mild acid to speed up the reaction time. Once you get the deserved effect you can lacquer to seal it in. We found it has been best left a few weeks and gets a bit more rain on it.

Andy, congrats on the MOT and a job well done (in record time)

X2 for pictures of the Dart when it gets here,

From experience I can recommend that Mark uses Araldite to fill up the cracks on the steering wheel, once he's ground them out, it works great becuse you get both a mechanical and a chemical bond and it's suprisingly easy to sand

Hi Ian. yep that's exactly what we have started to do, after a bit of research on you tube.

So far its had all the chips grind out with the dremel and 2 fills of araldite, might fill a few of the small chips and then paint. I guess you also need a good few coats of lacquer over the paint?

More progress this weekend but not worthy of any photos

Fuel sender repaired and wired up,
Air ride remote switches installed in cab
cill trims fitted
wiring tidied up

Nice to not be covered in oil or grinding dust for a change.

Also started a thread for my 59 Apache, please come and visit me over there!!!!

I used Mipa Rapidfiller self etching primer filler, it sticks great so no worries about the paint peeling off and fills any bits and pieces you have missed around the araldite, it's a single pack too

Then I used regular gloss 2k black and body colour, flatted black then a coat of 2k clear flatted and polished. I figured that as it's something you touch all the time it would need to feel nice (OOH EER Missus) and be super hard wearing.

Pinstripes are optional

Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England

Thanks Ian, and good timing too. Mark has filed and filled the cracks with Ardalite, one coat of primer and then a little bit more filling. Ian, its funny what you say about feeling nice.I keep telling Mark that its worth all the effort and time to keep sanding and filling as it's the one thing you touch and hold whilst driving, so important to have it spot on.

First filler rubbed down and primed again, might just need a little bit more filling, then top coat.

The passenger side door would not lock from the inside, so stripped out the drivers side to compare and noticed the latch cam had rounded off a little, so built it back up with a bit of weld. Door locks as it should now :-)
Drivers side as it should be

Passenger side built up with weld

Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England

A new chapter in the trucks life begins today. Mark took the truck home and did a 40 mile trip no problems. We had a busy week of finishing things off like the steering wheel, air ride, door locks, bit of carb and timing tuning. There is still plenty to do..... are these projects ever finished..............I think not. Anyway it's now at a point where Mark can use the truck and do the work.

This is my favourite bit of the paint

So now I have an empty drive, Boohoo :-( ........ Haha only kidding , picked this up from Southampton docks on Friday.

71 Dodge Dart 360cu ... open headers wow it's loud!

I'll handover to Mark for the truck updates now. But you can see my 59 Apache via the link in the signature below. and i might mention the Dart too!

Thumbs up Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England

Sorry Andy, Yes your right :-))))

The smile is truly on my face permanently when driving through Liverpool, keep getting stopped and people asking what is it LOL, only last week a girl jumped out of a taxi and asked if it could be used to carry the bridesmaid to her weeding early next year, Ha ha.

Anyway now for the important stuff, new heater core arrived so need to replace that due to getting steamed up inside the cab, new wipers.
Going to alter the rear axle as its running on a 3.73 and purchased a 3.08 yes i understand it will slow it down on acceleration but hold on.
Just ordered from Stovebolts the twin exhaust manifold, a twin inlet manifold and twin Carter weber carbs which hopefully give me back the power on take off.

Any more tips please but please dont say a v8 i love my straight 6

Anyone got a garage nearby as i dont and the weather is holding up all of this and more work LOL

Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England

All roller applied using 6" mini rollers. base coat (original paint) is keyed down after repairs welding etc with just 120 grade wet n dry. Then roller on the red oxide primer( this was cellulose). Don't flat this primer coat down. The colour paint is 2 pack but with a matting agent rolled on using mini rollers, it goes off quick and does make the rollers expand, so you need to work fast and replace the rollers a few times, a good finish at this stage is not essential so thicker parts and runs don't matter it's all about getting the paint on the vehicle, 2 coats will be needed.
Then the hard part begins flatting down, use 320 wet n dry and get the paint all over flat i.e. even mattness, no dimples or orange peel effect. Then decide what bits to rub though to the red primer. Once you are happy with all of this, get a power polishers and buff the heck out of it with G3 rubbing compound then apply polish.

The paint can be wet sanding within a few hours of painting, best to be it sooner than leaving it to fully hardness over say 2 weeks.

As a guide the bonnet took me 4 hours to wet sand and polish. The plus point for me of this way of painting is you dont get the over spray mess all over your garage or drive and with using 2 pack rollered you dont get the air borne nasty particles.

This is my 59 apache using the same technique

Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England

Top end of engine strip down beings. The only photo I have of Mark working on HIS truck after this photo he opted to just drink tea and watch haha !

The head is off and away for rebuild. It's having all new valves, the valves guides re worked, unleaded exhaust valve seat and new inlet valve seats. It will then be rebuilt with twin crabs and a split 6 into 2 stove bolt manifold.

Other mods are to the suspension, new shocks all round and add in some restrictor valves to the air ride , so the front and rear drop at the same rate and in a nice manner. Currently the rear drops at a nice rate but the front due to engine weight drops like a stone! Which is uncool!

Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England

Head has been rebuilt and refitted. But outside working and constant rain is delaying progress! Head has all new valves, new seats and exhaust seats for unleaded, also skimmed as it was slightly warped.

I just reread the post above, in case you wondered it will have twin carbs fitted NOT twin crabs! lol
