Grinding all the welds down still. Going back and welding again when I find a hole. First I have been grinding them pretty close with the cut off wheel, then finishing with the flap disk. The whole weld area will end up being lower than the adjacent areas slightly which will make it easy to have a thin layer of filler/ thick primer for blocking out before paint.

Now we go into uncharted territory.

I really want this truck to be one I WANT to drive, all the time. So I need to make it as functional, smooth, fast, efficient, good driving, and quiet as a new truck. I figured the easiest and best way to go about it was to have as much modern equipment as possible, including the frame and modern suspension geometry. (4 wheel disc with ABS, factory rack & pinion, etc.) So here we are with a 2001 2wd Silverado frame. Problem is, nobody has done any write-ups on something like this. I will be engineering this as I go and could probably use some ideas from you guys here on the forum. Let the comments fly!

First thing I see tonight is the carrier bearing mount is way too tall. (The hoop looking thing.)
Body mounts on the frame aren't needed because the 72 body mounts line up perfectly with the wider new frame rails.
Overall frame length will need to grow by approximately 4 inches.
Too much frame kick up in the rear.

I personally like the frame portion. Taking the dirtiest part, and reworking with new clean parts and then there a re the details that not very many people will see.

You can more than likely ditch the carrier bearing cross member and relocate it how you want and where you need it once you get the rear axle and power train set in the chassis. As for the frame kick up being too high, you could do some figuring and this might be an idea. Right where it kicks up starting before the last cab mount, and before the spring mount, try to find how much kick up you need. Cut the frame at maybe a 45* cut somewhere in that area. Remove some material needed to get the kick up you desire. Cut the other at 45*, bevel each side, weld up, then plate the inside and either bolt this in or weld it in. Then place your rear axle and figure out where you can add your 4" of frame to achieve your desired wheel base. Good luck with this portion of the project. It is coming along nicely!

I wonder if the rear section of the frame from a 2001 suburban or tahoe is the same profile. I have a 2003 yukon denali, but haven't looked underneath it much.

If it is just the location of the kick up being too far forward to work you could section the frame and move the kick up rearward where it will work. Then all you have to do it add some extra material up front to create the wheel base you need.

I did this on my 67 K10 conversion to make a square body chassis fit the body better without need for a body lift.

I Really enjoy my Current 86 Crew Stepper & One of my long term goals is to Have a 67-68 Style Crew Stepper some day, I have been collecting parts for a couple yrs now & Hope to Start sometime in next yr or so........

I have been studying this a lot and it would be cake if I was building a 4wd. Building a lowered truck makes it very hard. I think now I will have to employ an old hot rodders trick and "channel" the body down over the frame. I will need to do this on the bed section only and will only channel the bed cross braces on the bottom of the bed for 2 inches, not the entire bed floor. Also will need to take out 3 inches off of the frame rise.

What I think I know so far:
99-2006 frames have a 9.5 inch rise or kick up for the bed.
The bodies on these trucks really hang down over the frame.
The new truck frame is 2 inches taller than my old frame, 4 inches wider.
67-72 truck bodies only hang down over the frame about 4.5 inches, so I need to keep the cab as close to the frame as possible to help hide the taller frame.
Old truck frames only kick up about 4.5 inches, So I need to come up with 5 inches of bed drop some how. (if I mounted the body and bed how they are now, the bodyline would be off by 5 inches)
All of these numbers are preliminary and will probably be adjusted somewhat.
