Re: 85 GMC Sierra "Scarlett"
Looks great! I've started using the Krylon Maxx Satin Black for painting parts, at your suggestion, and it works so well. Thanks for the tip!

Re: 85 GMC Sierra "Scarlett"
Thanks I have tried several different brands and Krylon is the best out there. It's not as good as the old formula for retaining it's sheen, but still a good product.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra "Scarlett"
Last night I had dinner with my daughter and son-in-law. We didn't get home till late but I still wanted to do something in the shop. I decided to remove the drivers side mirror in anticipation of the new one that has now been shipped.
This mirror had one of the threaded inserts missing, and the inner brace was gone too. Consequently the mirror was held on with mismatched bolts and nuts. Guess where the nuts went when I removed the bolts? Yep, they fell inside the door. Hmm, now what? I had planned to completely restore the interior after the C10sinthepark run, but it looks like a partial job will ensue. As expected the door panels were held on with a huge assortment of styles and lengths of screws. Those will be replaced and the panels will be stripped to the base. This was not where I was headed, but here I am.

Snowball, you say? That's my middle name. Looking forward to seeing the interior updates/upgrades.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra "Scarlett"
Last night I continued on with the door panel project. I removed all of the small parts and noted that there were at least two layers of dye on them. This is going to be tedious.
I first tried lacquer thinner but it wasn't hot enough. Very little of the dye was coming off. I stepped up the heat with brake cleaner. This was applied to a folded paper towel and the color started coming off. I had thought that the panels were much more worn and most of the texture was gone. It turns out they are actually in great shape, it was the excessive amount of dye filling up the grain.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra "Scarlett"
With the door panels stripped and ready for the next round of cleaning it was time to set them aside and turn my attention to the doors.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra "Scarlett"
They needed a thorough cleaning inside and out before I could go further. I started with Windex and Scotchbrite then wiped everything clean with solvent. This would give me a clean surface for mounting the sound deadner.
I pulled all the hardware and blasted it clean. It was set aside for paint while I analyzed the wiring. It was all in good shape except the plug for the door lock actuator. The wiring will get fresh tape and I will try to locate a connector for the actuator.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra "Scarlett"
I cut strips of sound deadner and ran a horizontal pattern inside the door. It's a slow process that's rather frustrating to get all the strips to align evenly but with patience and persistence the dramatic reduction in sound resonance is well worth the effort.
I mounted the painted hardware and door handle assembly and gave the window harness a new wrap of tape. I think it's time to call it done for the night.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra "Scarlett"
I've got similar plans for my 85.
I was gonna clean the inside of the doors with royal purple then some alcohol so that the sound deadner would stick. What chemicals and deadner materials are you using?

Re: 85 GMC Sierra "Scarlett"
Saturday was a productive day. Chris had errands to run so I worked on cleaning shop and got back to my door project. Just like before, I cleaned it thoroughly with Windex and Scotchbrite then followed with brake cleaner on paper towels.
All the hardware was blasted and painted and the wiring harness cleaned up.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra "Scarlett"
Once we wrapped that up, it was time to move on to the brakes. Before we could bleed them we needed to flush the system. It was obvious that it had never been done and I had no intentions of putting that gunk in my new brake calipers. We disconnected the lines and made purge bottles.
Chris pumped till it was dry and we cleaned the reservoir. He pumped till clean fluid filled the lines and we locked it down after a final purge and bleed.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra "Scarlett"
After the brakes were done we moved on to the fender liners. They had been patiently waiting and now it was their turn. We gently slipped them in place and installed the freshly painted bolts.
I can tell you this job can be done with one person, but having Chris work one end made it go so much smoother. We have almost no touch up to do because of that extra set of eyes and hands.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra "Scarlett"
how do you keep painted bolts from getting all buggered up when installing them?

Re: 85 GMC Sierra "Scarlett"
I've found that to be an issue as well. No special technique for me other than letting them dry really well and just being careful with the bolt/screw head.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra "Scarlett"
Chris and I wrapped up a lot of little details and double checked our work. We finished the install of the splash gaurds that go behind the fenderliners. I had sprayed them with undercoat and let them dry overnight. It was time to put the cherry on top of the cake.
I will fix pics later..

Re: 85 GMC Sierra "Scarlett"
After lunch we focused on getting Scarlett on the ground again. Since someone made the exhaust one piece I had to cut it to remove it. Now we had to figure out how to temporarily reinstall it. We improvised using a rolled up piece of aluminum flashing held in place by hose clamps. Hey, it ain't pretty but it might get me to the muffler shop.
We triple checked our work and filled the transmission with new fluid. We added fresh gas to the tank and started her up. She sputtered a bit, then came to life. For the first time in several weeks Scarlett was driving again. She made the short trip to her stall in the garage and Chris and I wrapped up for the night.
