Re: n2billet's project 68 "Extreme Makeover" hot rod style
No updates on the truck because there hasn't been any progress. N2billet just recently bought a new house and in typical custom trucker fashion proceeded to do a ground up restoration on it. Not because it needed it, but because it wasn't exactly how he wanted it.
Now that he has finished most of that and they are moved in he may have a couple of minutes to work on the 68. That is right after he gets back from the Goodguys Rod run in Columbus...

Re: n2billet's project 68 "Extreme Makeover" hot rod style
It's been a while since I've posted on the 68 due to my new and improved work schedule. Anyway, I've got the brakes lines finally ran, well not actually me. I talked my buddy Roger into running the lines, he can do this in his sleep while I strugggle and cuss my way through it and with the price of stainless what it is today it was best that he did it anyway. I've also got the P/S lines ran all hooked up again and this time I think it will work without leaking Just a few more items and it will be ready to start driving again........I'm going to try and have all the bugs worked out before I go overseas for work......time will tell!

Re: n2billet's project 68 "Extreme Makeover" hot rod style
Finally got a Saturday off so I worked a little on the truck trying to get it ready for GoodGuys in Fort Worth. It’s finally up and running with the good help from my buddy Roger but the motor is leaking everywhere I’m not to concerned about that but it’s leaking like crap out of the exhaust manifold. OK what have I done wrong? It might even be leaking out of the intake as well, I’ve tightened the bolts as tight as I feel comfortable with but it’s still leaking…….anybody have any ideals about the 250 6 cylinders? Also it has those little washer things that hold the exhaust and intake up to the head, maybe I put those on wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated….
And no Ken, I didn't take any pictures..... |

Re: n2billet's project 68 "Extreme Makeover" hot rod style
I'll get it all fixed, I guess adding P/S, P/B, HEI and new carb was a little much for the old girl. I hope to bleed the brakes this week and service the trans and then start trouble shooting......My main concern is the intake/manifold.... I can't stand exhaust leaks............

Re: n2billet's project 68 "Extreme Makeover" hot rod style
You know this may or may not work, but I guess it depends what type of exhaust gasket you used but I have heard that if you soak the exhaust gasket in water before you install it is supposed to seal better. When is the Goodguys show in Dallas?

Sorry about your exhaust leak, my old 70 step had a 250 and it leaked under
the carb, tried everything including another manifold, trucks looking good

Glad to hear thenew home project is done and Lucy is making progress. I was wondering when you were going to get in the back truck mode again. Have yout talked to the guys that worked on your Rambler motor? Maybe they know something about inlines that aren't flat heads. BTW------

Re: n2billet's project 68 "Extreme Makeover" hot rod style
I have heard folks using high temp sealant on the gaskets before installing. And It will take several heat/cool cycles with retightening to get it to truly seal. I was having this problem, but after a few cycles, things seem to be better.
And make sure that the washers and bolts are hitting the intake and exhaust at equally. I didn’t see if the intake and the exhaust are the same thickness, but if the intake is thicker, it will keep the pressure off the exhaust manifold. I am sure folks at Inliners.com will have more tips if you have not been over there. Glad to see the inline 6!

Are the leaks noise only or fluids as well? What's your schedule next week? I had to do the water soak deal on the intake/exh gaskets for the 6cyl in the Beater. It didn't leak after that. I have also used the 'spray-on' style gasket sealant from Permatex w/good results (I actually coated my steel shim gaskets on the 350 w/that stuff). You can get a nice even coating w/it & help seal quality w/o a mess. I'll bring some out if you want to try it. Let me know.....

Sweet looking truck! How much was the bag setup? After seeing this, I've been thinking about keeping my step bed and actually rebuilding one of my 250's. Again, nice ride and please let me know how much your air ride was and where you got it at? Thanks

Re: n2billet's project 68 "Extreme Makeover" hot rod style
When I went to replace my cracked exhaust manifold on my 70, I was told to use the copper gasket sealant on the gasket. I don't remember who told me to use it, but I never had a leak. It works real good on them old sixes with their weird (to me) bolt down.

I pieced it together from parts I had around the shop and made the rest. The only thing I bought was the air management system from Air Ride.....so I'm not much help......sorry...

What kind of carb are you going to run on it? 1 barrel? i have a inline 6 and summit racing makes a 4 barrel set up im thinking about getting. I dont know how it would run with a 4 tho.

Awesome truck man! That I-6 looks sweet in there, even though I prefer the power of the V-8 but those I-6's look killer!

Re: n2billet's project 68 "Extreme Makeover" hot rod style
Still running the 1 barrel, I had it recoated before it was rebuilt so it looks new again......I have another carb so if I do switch it up I'm going to run 2, 1 barrels to match my flat head 6 I have in one of my Ramblers.
