Re: 57 GMC, frame swap, 4wd, 454 big block, 4 speed

Thanks guys!

I spent a little time on the bed over the weekend. I got the steel ribbed floor fit and mostly installed in the bed. I have a little more to do on the custom cross braces and attaching the rear of the floor to the rear of the bed. Once I get that done, I'll get all of the mounting holes drilled and test fit the bed on the truck, then pull it back off to get the liner sprayed underneath and inside of the bed.

Re: 57 GMC, frame swap, 4wd, 454 big block, 4 speed

A little more progress on the truck yesterday. I coated the underside of the front fenders, and fit/installed the blasted and primed front sheet metal and powder coated grill. I'm also about to get the bed with the ribbed steel floor ready to fit to the frame, then I can get the bed liner sprayed on it. I plan on getting the truck running and driving, then eventually take it back apart for body work and paint when I can afford a nice paint job. I think it has a pretty tough looking stance. I need to get the seat recovered in black too.

The wheel and tire combo and the way the truck sits is absolutely perfect.

Thanks Black Sheep, I'm really happy with how it looks. Its coming out like I've pictured it in my mind for the last 3 years. It took me a while to find decent hubcaps to use. The wheels are powder coated cream white. I have the proper blue hub dials to go in the front hubs too, just need to get them installed.

And your truck looks so good in the pics out in the sun!

Re: 57 GMC, frame swap, 4wd, 454 big block, 4 speed

I took the afternoon to finish installing the 80's ribbed steel bed floor in my 8' long bed, and test fit the bed to the frame. My measurements were good, the 4 holes I used to measure from lined up good, and I had to drill 4 more in the frame. Even the height of the bed came out good and the steps lined up with the bottom of the cab when I clamped them on. Hopefully I'll have a chance and a nice day to prep the bed and spray the liner soon.

Re: 57 GMC, frame swap, 4wd, 454 big block, 4 speed

Thanks guys! Its great to see it look like a truck again after over 3 years of working on it. I'm installing the receiver hitch on it now, before the bed will go back on. I only needed to notch the side skirt of the bed side about 2" to clear the fuel filler neck. It goes straight out between the frame and the bed floor, and is in the back area of the fender. When I make the filler neck pipes and hose, I'll install the flip-up gas cap in the back of the fender.

Truck is looking great! And I love how you demonstrate that you have decent legroom in front of the bench

Thanks Mark, I'm really happy with it. I think it looks great, and it'll be durable when I want to use it like a truck.

I totally understand. Unless you really abuse it, the bed liner will look good for a long time. My work truck has Line-X bed liner, I haul semi parts and leaky hydraulic cylinders but it still cleans up nice. 130K and counting...

Thanks! This is the same liner that I sprayed underneath and inside my cab. A 3 sprayable gallon kit on Ebay is about 200 bucks, and it comes with a cheap gun. I used the gun it came with, and just tossed it out when I was done. It screws onto the quart can of reducer, and it sprays out of that.

I like it. Had less durable stuff put on my beds sides and wish i had used a line x product. Anyone done the entire vehicle in a similar product?

I think on certain trucks, this would look really cool to coat the whole thing. Better make sure that it's what you want for good though... I'd hate to try to remove this stuff later. It is available in colors, and 2 textures. I used the regular, called light crumb. They have a heavy texture available, called heavy crumb. It looked very rough in the pictures.

I have seen Jeeps and 4x4 mud trucks done entirely in bed liner, inside and out. I imagine it's durable, low maintenance and would easily camouflage less than perfect bodywork, but that look isn't for everyone.

That said, there's SEM brand bed liner all over my '58 but the only easily visible area is the cab step area. Hopefully it will provide a durable and attractive finish for years to come.

That's what I'm hoping for... a nice durable finish that will last. I used it in the bed for when I haul things to protect it. I sprayed in underneath, on the firewall, and on the inside floor of my cab after all the rust was fixed, and it was media blasted and primed. It should last a lot longer than it did originally.

After all my paint headaches and expense i definitely would have used a liner in Air Force blue on mine. Blue body and black on fender chip areas and bed. Being an old military vehicle i think it would have been great.

Have you ever used Raptor Liner, if so how does this product compare?

I haven't used Raptor Liner. I know a few people that have used the Liner Xtreeme, and I liked it, so that's what i went with. It looks and feels heavy duty. I've had 3 trucks before that were professionally sprayed with Line-X, and this product looks pretty close to it.
