Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

Capt'n - sorry I was referring to the D52 brackets I got from you, I've been unsuccessful in my search for finding any of the caddi parts

Haha I don't think you've dropped the ball, but i'm thinking im going to keep moving forward with the the rest of my build and wait on you to slam dunk these brackets

RdoubleU, the brackets you mentioned, are those the D52 brackets you got from me, or are you talking about the e-brake cable brackets?

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

You should be running smaller diameter piston calipers on the rear than are on the front. The 2" bore calipers on the front, and the 1-1/4" bore on the rear

suttoncurt, you were correct, you will need 120-10938 on the rear. The 120-10939 that CPP sent you are for 1" thick rotors. The Astro rotors are 1-1/4" thick rotors. The 120-10936 are 2" bore calipers for 1-1/4" thick rotors on the front.

The PO of my truck put a front end out of a 84 on my 68 I will have to measure the front rotors but I beleive they are the 1 inch will have to check this weekend . My quistion is if this is the case is it okay to run 1 inch in the front and the 1 1/4 in the rear?

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

The thickness of the rotors really doesn't affect the braking bias. That is done with sizing the caliper pistons and regulating the fluid flow thru the use of a proportioning valve, either fixed or adjustable. So to answer your question, you should be fine with 1" rotors on the front and 1-1/4" on the rear. Let me know when you are ready for a set of these brackets.

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

Got a question for you capt. I have an extra front set of brakes from a 82 C10 can I use these to just swap the front brakes from the 82 to the rear of my 77? If so what else would I need to finish the swap?

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

By brakes do you mean the calipers? If so then yes you can use the front calipers as long as they are for the 1.25" thick rotors. In addition to the calipers you will need the brackets, rotors, pads, hoses, a disc/disc or an adjustable proportioning valve, a disc/disc master cylinder, and some miscellaneous small parts.

Thumbs up Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

Hey Captainfab, i was doing some researching on Wilwood's website, and after reading this entire thread, I really like the idea of having the Wilwood D52 calipers on all four corners but i really have to retain a parking brake for safety inspection. What do you personally think about the Wilwood kits for the rear of my truck? I'd like to use the Wilwood D52 up front since i have Powerstop drilled rotors already, (Chevy Caprice 1" front rotors). So i need the 2" front piston dia. D52 calipers. I guess my question is, you would think one of Wilwood's rear kits would work in "harmony" with their own front replacement calipers...??

Here's the URL to the page i was looking at on Wilwood's site.. http://wilwood.com/BrakeKits/BrakeKi...olet&model=C10

I really like the D154 rear kit they mention for $750 since it matches their front calipers but they say it won't fit with 15" wheels...

http://wilwood.com/BrakeKits/BrakeKi...olet&model=C10

And i like the Dynapro low-profile but the calipers in that kit are 4-piston, but that setup fits a 15" wheel.....

...Also after looking at their internal parking brake drum style setup it doesn't look that complicated to incorporate it into your brackets, then we could use D52 rear calipers, 1.25" dia pistons, and have their parking brake setup but that leaves what rotor to use?.... hmmm..

Any thoughts from anybody whose had experience with these setups??? or similair setups?

Thanks, Kris

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

I don't have any experience with any of the Wilwood kits, so I really can't give an opinion.

I realize there is a definite need for a kit with an e-brake, and I do plan on working on one, but I just don't know when as I am still working 70-80 hrs a week with no end in sight.

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

I've been cruising Autozone checking for parts and I'm a little confused. I keep reading the d52's are on 71-87 trucks but the parts differ on AZ's website. I did run across a note on the 84' calipers that says it is for J5 brake system. Is this what we would use?
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...vice=234655186

Or will the ones they show for my truck work, I have a 78?

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

That Autozone link does not specify which thickness rotor that caliper is for. An '84 could have either the 1" thick rotors or the 1.25" thick rotors. I'm pretty sure the '78 only came with a 1.25" thick rotor. You want the D52 caliper for a 1.25" thick rotor. One way to ID a D52 caliper is that the center to center of the slide bolts is aprox 7" and typically has a 2-15/16" diameter piston. The JB/JD7 calipers have a 3-5/32" diameter piston.

So 78 should be a d52, correct?

Yes. All '71-'87 C/K series use the D52 calipers. But some are for the 1" thick rotor and some are for the 1.25" thick rotor.

Do these require a longer wheel stud, or is the rotor hat of similar thickness to the drum?

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

The rotor hat is thicker than a drum. Some guys are running the same wheel studs, and others are changing to a little longer studs. I'd say it depends on what wheels you are running.

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

Captainfab,
I'm gathering parts for this conversion and I am curious what master cylinder too use. Is there an easy way to find an MC that is disc disc that will work on my 78? It looks like I have a 1.125 bore.

Thanks.

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

One of the most common master cylinders to use for a disc/disc conversion is a Corvette master cylinder. You will also need either a disc/disc proportioning valve or an adjustable valve in the rear line.
