Any 0ne Ton 4wd from the`70s is cool with me!Nice truck.

I`ve seen those cabover military 4wds.I didn`t know the mechanics part about the buses.Was it for airfields?

Gotta agree with the above - the body style of the above Ford is one of my favorites - an older buddy had a 1977 Ford when I was growing up and I really liked it.

They were mobile repair shops outfitted with a lathe, press, torches, welder, heat (pussies), spare parts, ect.

I like all old trucks before 1980.I prefer GM for myself.If I could have whatever I want I`d be like a Jay Leno with all trucks trying to cover the spectrum from large to small..

If you look closely you can see the turquoise Ford Stepside has had the front fenders opened up. It is very suttle but it gives room for bigger tires. I noticed the contrast of the Ford beds I posted up. There are 2 different styles of fleetside (Chevy terminology) beds along with the stepside. A lot of guys like to swap out the divorced t-case and front axle with newer stuff. I have a friend who has a 67 3/4 ton with a FI 460,C6,divorced 205, High pinion kingpin open knuckle disc braked Dana 60 in the front and a GM 14bolt out back. Both axles run Detroit lockers and disc brakes. The HP 60 is a cool swap because it gets the driveshaft up out of the way. For the Ford purists out here he installed the 14 bolt because they are cheap, plentiful and bullet proof. He has 4.56 or 4.88 gears and runs 37 inch tires. It is a great truck for 4 wheeling.
I too am a Chevy guy, GM interchangeability and simple reliable drivetrain are key factors in my preference. The fact that my Mom worked for GM Powertrain for 25 years has nothing to do with it!

Ya all those slick sixties (61-66) 3/4 ton 4x4 Ford came with the non-matching rear bed from the factory stock. It was a bed that was intended for the 57-59 series. They were simply using up the old stuff! You could however order the 4x4 3/4 ton with the regular matching bed, if you special ordered it. All 1/2 tons came with the proper matching box. As for the fenders, they are actually different on the 4x4. Those fenders are stock and much harder to come by. Luckily my F100 has a good set. All two wheel drives from 61-64 were unibody as well. The cab and bed were all one piece, which sucked because of no flex and rust was an issue. Ford claims that a 4x4 was never made in Unibody, I have not yet seen one. Anyways there is some Ford history for you. Like my best friend the Chevy lover always says," Ford, hey at least they circled the problem" LOL

Hey cool history! I knew about the beds and the unibodies, but not the fenders. Thanks for the info. I have a question you may know(I do not want to hijack too much) I've seen early 1/2 ton 4wd, post 1959 to about early sixties with Dana 44's and 9 inchers. Did Ford use both? I also knew the M engines are underated and overlooked and do make good power when done right. What class drag boat, I hang with the GN guys.

Talking about Fords, I saw 2 unibodies yesterday a short and a long bed. How often does that happen to see 2 in one day? This was on the street not at a car show.

Ok sorry it took so long, but here is the one I see parked all the time about 4 miles from my house. I'll throw in an unusual Commanche pickup too. It was right across the street from the unibody Ford.

I`ve only seen the 57-60 "Stylesides" (Ford terminology) on the 61-64s past 1960.You had a choice of either a unibody or the old bed.I believe they couldn`t let the old bed go because a unibody was a new idea that may not have been one of Ford`s "Better Ideas".They look nice,but not a good idea.Did they even offer the unibody on 4wds?But,I`ve seen both beds on everything except 4wds.But,no old beds on 65/66s.
The 351M was a dog from the factory,a gutless gas guzzler.It`s like the factory did what you or I might do when we screw with the combinations not knowing what we were doing.The motor can definately come alive and then some.My friend bought a`78 F350 4wd back then with an "M" and it was awful on gas and power.Just a cam,intake,carb,headers,and duals woke that thing up like a different motor.

It's funny how things are all interconnected. My first 4x4 was a 65 ford F-250 step side high boy! what a monster. I wish I had a pic but that was a long time ago. I could barely keep the thing running. It was a forest service truck. It came to me with a massive bush bumper, cattle guard style and a set of bull horns on the hood. Yep! Redneck! Looking at those pics it is funny. My truck was faded red like the one truck, but the truck was just like the teal green step side, just a little taller I think. Not nearly that nice, but no real rust. boy I wish I had a pic.

Ya look at my m-block im making more horses and spinning higher than most 460s! I have a green hydro and a red flatbottom. I run in the river racer bracket class. Gonna build a blown alky chevy soon for the hydro and move up a few classes.

That`s some bad boats there.They sure make a truck look good being towed.But,are happier when wet and spinning the outdrive.They may not be 4wds but they are "off road".

What is the red flattie? Looks to be a 16 footer, but whose hull. Its an older style but looks different from my Raysoncraft. I'll bet it turns good though.

they did use Dana 44 (actually called spicer 44s then) and nine inches. The old f100s had the spicers. They look even more archaic than the Dana 44!

Its a 16'6'' Glen-L missile. With about 680hp! It turns real well and goes like hell in a straight away! But not nearly as fast and efficient as my hydro....

I know Ford guys that don`t like these.I figure they were just mad the Bobtails were gone.But,the 78/79s are cool.These are the only solid axle fullsize Broncos.I always liked them,inspite of my Chevy blood.

Ha Ha. That Bronco is awesome. I had one of those too. Those things are sooooooo tough. We beat on mine hard. mine looked similar to that one . not as tall and not that nice but mine was blue and white (in the beginning). This thread is turning into the "memories of your life".
