Re: Where/How did you find your Truck ?

I found my truck on Craigslist.
The first time I saw it there was an auction add: 69 Chevy 4x4, 34,800 original miles. My first thought was wow! I would love that truck, but could never afford it. I had a 69 K20 30 years ago. The add went away, and I kept dreaming as I searched craigslist for the right truck.
About 4 months later the truck was back up for sale, a small lot had it for sale, it was too much money, but such low original miles. A couple weeks later the price dropped. I had a good chunk of the cash, so I went to look at it. It was a Fire Truck / Maintenance Truck for some local small airports. The miles were original, you can tell, but the body was a little rough and there is some rust. I walked away... Talked to the wife on the phone, she said "you will never find another with that low of miles". I went back, made an offer and he said sold!
I still need to paint the bumpers and mirrors white, do some dent repairs, but I love it. It's hauled dirt, rock, firewood, furniture and goes great in the snow!!

Re: Where/How did you find your Truck ?

After a good year of serious hunting for a 67 or 68 SWB fleet ( or any 67-72 with the 67/68 front clip ) I located my '67 initially on eBay. Followed it around on that site for several months then called the guy up and negotiated a price. Flew to Albuquerque NM for the inspection. Drove it that same day 9 hours to my home.

That was maybe 5 months ago!

Re: Where/How did you find your Truck ?

Good reading here!

In 2013 I found mine at a classic car dealer in Palm Springs, CA. Paid a fellow to go inspect it, flew there from Houston with my friend, drove it back 2,100 miles to Houston!

Since then, I installed ECE lowering kit, new seat cover and drove it a bunch in Texas. 2015, moved home to Canada and towed it up. This past summer (2016) had a 402 BB installed with 700R4.

Re: Where/How did you find your Truck ?

I’ve been inspired to get some sort of classic vehicle for years. I was particularly impressed when visiting Rockport Texas on vacation. Outside of a local pizza joint there was a beautiful old Dodge truck, probably from about 1970. Weathered 2x8 boards were propped up to act as a tailgate and a Ram emblem was nailed to it, although I’m sure the truck was made years before Dodge dreamed up the Ram label. Body panels, doors, hood, fenders, and various other parts were all different colors from being pieced together from many trucks. PVC pipes were bolted to the front bumper, sticking straight up to act as fishing rod holders for trips to the beach. I’m sure bubblegum and bailing wire was in the mix somewhere. I remember thinking man if I had a couple thousand bucks I would wait for the owner to come back to the truck and make an outrageous offer.

Fast forward to a couple years ago, I was telling a friend that I want an old truck and I asked him to keep an eye out for something that may interest me. He lives out in the country and has lots of contact with country folks who may have something laying around. I told him my only requirements were that it be old, not 80’s-old but I mean 50’s- or 60’s-old, and have the original paint job and not be missing any pieces. Within a week or two, he called me and said he has my truck. I asked what do you mean, and he says remember Ron’s place where we go fishing in his ponds, he had an old 1969 Chevy truck he asked to have hauled off. It has been an eyesore in his back field, sinking more and more into the mud as the years go by.

In exchange for some labor and favors, he hauled it off of Ron’s property. I went to look at it, and it appeared pretty much the same as in my profile picture, except dirtier. It had plates from 1985 on it. I am the second owner and I have the original owner manual and bill of sale from the now-defunct dealership. Now, after spending too much money on engine and transmission rebuild, here I am driving the thing. I like it a lot.

It has the original dealer rear bumper. I grew up in Texas, and I believe near 100% of trucks sold in Texas at the time were shipped from the factory with no bumper and the dealers had bumpers made from local manufacturers and stamped with the dealer name and city. That is how I remember things. My bumper is stamped Doran Chev. Inc. Dallas, Texas, and in smaller letters it is stamped D&D Bumperworks, Inc, Seguin, Texas. The trucks shipped from the factory with a license plate holder and license plate light mounted to the frame underneath the truck, and my truck still has it there.

I could have ended up with a Ford or Dodge, but didn’t. I’m glad I ended up here with you guys and gals. You have helped a lot with my education.

Re: Where/How did you find your Truck ?

Dads neighbor had it in his driveway for a long time after the rear bumper had been hit and it pushed the truck into the car in front. All it needed after sitting was:
A battery
Front bumper
Heater core
intake manifold gaskets
new headers
alternator
New Booster

Re: Where/How did you find your Truck ?

I found my 70 Longhorn on Craigslist right here in CT. I looked at dozens of trucks before I came upon this one. It was on Craigslist for only 15 minutes and I was the first one to call. Its a 100% original and rust free 85,000 mile one owner truck. The guy owned a small family roofing business, he NEVER drove the truck in snow and it was parked inside every night. Rust free in CT? Now that's rare! The first pic is the day I hauled it home...

Re: Where/How did you find your Truck ?

This summer (right before the Midwest Nats) my wife gave me permission to buy a decent truck.

I was zero-ing on one from KC to purchase but a fellow member beat me to it so the search continued.

As you know.. ebay has an ever rotating inventory so it was only a matter of time. Then early December is saw this one.

Seller is a Mopar guy who was selling his deceased fathers toy. I'm not a "custom" guy as much as I'm a "restomod" guy so this one was not EXACTLY what I was looking for. The truck is a early 90's hot rod. But it was in my ball park money wise and it didn't sell the first time through ebay. So I sent the seller a request for the SPID. This is what I got.

Yup, Found me a highly optioned 50th anniversary truck. I couldn't close the deal fast enough. Booked a flight to Knoxville Tn. that weekend (550 bucks) and drove it home. I was in such a hurry that I never asked the seller about a heater (it was 16 degrees) and it didn't work all the way home (13 hrs). But when I got home I found a shut off valve under the hood. LOL, sometimes I'm my worst enemy.

Anyways the seller was 100% cool guy. Has a garage full of high dollar Mopars. He'd be buddies with anyone here. Just a genuine dude.

The plans are to update the rims. Mild static drop. Interior update. And just enjoy it for a few years (5-10) until I decide to return it to a 50th.

Re: Where/How did you find your Truck ?

I found my first ones on the Calif Recycler Before Craigslist.Plus back in 1990 Calif went throw a clean up stange.Meaning if you have Trucks and Car's that where not lic or running and not parts on pavement you had to remove it or get a fine.it was called urban clean up for Calif.Boy the deals that the guy i worked for from out of this tow yard.I bought about 15 of them for 25.00--to 300.00You guys missed the golden times.Or most of you.The guys just now getting into it now are getting the left overs. There are still about 15,000 25,000 of then still left but they will need work and the money you have to spend for them. But i liked picking up the 2 car wreckers with the dove tails one came out of Riverside Race way 1968 fully loaded 396 th400 AC it was white and Blue inside it had AC power steering and brake 2 extra gas tanks light bar.My boss got that the other one was a riverside race way But it was Hit in the front it was a 1971 350 th400 No Ac it was white on white. But i did buy a 1965 C60 16 foot Bob tail 327 4 speed with split rear end payed 500.00 for it running.Love the big trucks to bad so many of them have been junked

Re: Where/How did you find your Truck ?

Retired Farmer Bill (RFB) buys a new '69 C10. RFB trades '69 for a new '72 C10. Dad buys the '69. RFB trades the '72 (w/28k miles) for something new in '84. Dad buys the '72. I get the '69 (just turned 16!). The '69 gets sold when I go off to college.

As Dad aged he no longer drove the '72 as it did not have power steering. So, in 1995, I bought it from him for $1200 with 42k miles. The first pic is pretty much what it looked liked from new to 2001. The second pic is from today with 52k miles and recently installed power steering .

Re: Where/How did you find your Truck ?

When I was 14 and had "C10 Fever" I would ride on a very long school bus ride everyday on the way home. I lived in the country so it was a very long way home. Anyways, one day I spotted a 72 SWB Cheyenne in the back yard of a house. Day after day i would sit in school, while my grades suffered and i would dream of the bus ride home seeing the pickup in the back yard. Well, one day the pickup was gone, i waited to see it again day after day at the house but it was gone for good. I felt horrible. A few weeks later on my way home from church, my mom and i spotted it. I told my dad and later that day we met the guy who was trying to flip it. Turns out I was a Custom Deluxe not a Cheyenne (we knew enough about the SPID then) we talked the guy down because he was trying to get the Cheyenne price, we got the Custom Deluxe price.
