Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
I was able to pull the 'burb out today and sweep up. The weather is finally nice enough. Here are some current photos. Also, I picked up a 351 V-6 the other weekend and started a tear down on it. I'll be installing it probably next winter. This winter I just need to get the windows all back in and the floors finished.
And here is the the 351 when I got it:

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
Here is the 351 currently. Everything is all torn down and, unfortunately, I foudn a spun rod bearing on #3 which means the short block is going off to the machine shop. I was hoping to just throw some new bearings and rings in it and go, but that is not to be. The crank had standard bearings in it though so it should be no problem turning it.
For those of you that don't know, the 351 has a bore of 4.56. Big mothers! All the components are cleaned up and ready for paint: And since I am going to be running TBI on this engine when it goes back in, and nobody in the world makes adapter plates for the Stromberg WWC pattern, I had to design my own adapter plate. I am going to have a buddy machine this up out of 1/2" aluminum for me.

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
Here's the progress for today. I had to grind all of the surface rust inside the window frames and prime/paint. I got the drivers side done today and hopefully I'll be able to do the pass. side tomorrow and then all of the window frame prep will be completed. I just ordered the windshield gasket, so hopefully I can get that installed in the next couple of weeks.

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
Progress! So, this week I got my Precision Brand windshield gasket and I installed it onto my windshield last night. I used 3M weather strip adhesive and taped all the hard bends and left it over night. I did the work inside so everything would be at room temperature.
Today I came home and installed the stainless steel trim. I am excited to put this thing in! I'll be that much closer to driving her again. It has been a long 5 months.

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
Cort,
What kind of paint are you using for the interior. Is it special mix spray cans or have been lucky enough to find closely matching colors for the Sub. It is nice that you are doing the interior close to stock, many of these old dashes get hacked up so badly it is tough to fix them. Looking good buddy! |

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
The interior color I've been getting at Lowe's. It is Rustoleum Stainless Steel. It's a little darker than stock, but I actually like it better and the finish is perfect I think.

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
Woohoo! Got the windshield in yesterday. And get this: with my girlfriends help, it took us all of 35 minutes!! After all the threads I read where guys have snapped windshields and glass companies have screwed them up, it was super easy, I thought. I am going to write a separate thread on what I did and how it was so easy for me.

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
Well i can tell you from expierence that on a 64-66 with the stainless trim I have seen glass guy's try to insert the windshield into the trim slot in the rubber more then once....The old school guys get it. But some of the newer glass guy's get confused with all the slots in the rubber....Infact I once watched a glass guy try to reverse the rubber and put the outside in the inside...Good job for doing all the research and setting yourself up for a easy install....thats awesome....glad it all worked out for you

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
That 351 with a TBI will be a torque monster for sure. A perfect candidate for some 2.73 or 3.00 gears. The 4 spd will almost be a requirement now to handle the torque of that engine.

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
Finally got the passenger side quarter window frame prepped and painted. Also squeezed in some time to prime the floor area that is being kept. I will be replacing the toe boards and rockers this next winter.

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
It's costing me a lot of money to get the quarter windows back in so unfortunately all the other little things I want to accomplish are getting pushed back.
The gasket set for one side of windows is $209! I got a quote yesterday to have new windows cut for the sides and it looks like they are going to be around $70 a piece. That's $280 a side for windows and $209 a side for gaskets = $489 per side. Damn. I didn't want to spend that much on just windows, but I guess I haven't really got a choice. I could re-use about 6 of 8 original windows but they are foggy and de-laminating and it would suck to spend that much on gaskets and put the old windows back in.

Cort, looks like you have a fine ride there and are taking the time to do it right.
Where did you buy your side window gaskets from? I need to replace mine, fortunately for me the glass is in good shape. Except for the driver side door, it's cracked. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
Exciting things today!
Well, starting yesterday anyways. I was on my home from work and swung by this fabric supply shop just for kicks to see what was going on in there. Digging through their bolts of vinyl, I found a sweet vintage pattern that looked like it belonged in our trucks as the headliner. Unfortunately it was a pale pink color. Haha. So, I bought 3 yards of it anyways and today I started installing it with an 1/8" foam backer for padding into my suburban. I spray painted it the same color that the rest of the interior is and all I can say is... well, look at the pics and you tell me what you think! Looks freaking awesome to me! And factory!
