Not fun... I literally almost cried, and I knew the damage to mine could be fixed.

Re: My other passion...65' Impala SS

I just bought a new rear quarter (the side that I didn't already replace) and will be putting that on here soon. With that, all my metal will be real solid!

Re: My other passion...65' Impala SS

Here's some new news... I decide to swap the powerglide for a 200-4r tranny. Should be much more enjoyable to drive around now!

Re: My other passion...65' Impala SS

Also, contemplating a rear gear swap that will work better with the final drive gear of the 200-4r at .67. Currently I have 3.08 gears, and I thinking of going to 3.55 or 3.73. Either of those should put the od crusing in the sweet spot. (I have 27" of tire height).

Re: My other passion...65' Impala SS

The 3.73's should work out real nice with the 200R4 and the weight of the car, should pull pretty good, nice having the lower first gear too.

Re: My other passion...65' Impala SS

New gears are 3.73... Changing out my current 3.08 gears. I bought the trans locally and just had a full "stage 2" rebuild done with new converter. I will be using a TV cable kit from bowtie overdrives for my Edelbrock carb to get the geometry just right, and I picked up a B&M torque converter lockup module that is speed controlled( as well as brake switch override). I can adjust the set speed from the dash while driving, and even has an LED to show when the converter is locked.

This should really make my summertime drives much more fun!

Thank you! I'll let you know! Even with the gear change, I am guessing I will see a difference. Going from a powerglide to a 4 speed auto with a .67 overdrive can't not help. My final cruise rpm looks like it will drop about 700rpm @70 mph, even with the gear swap....

Your car is a sexxy beast.
I don't think the 200r4 is a good idea at all... You had better send it to my house. I'll dispose of it for you.

Haha, thanks man.
Yea, with your new 3.90 gears and posi in your camaro, I bet a 200-4r would be a perfect match with your 327!

Not sure on MPG's yet, but I'm at 2100 RPM @65 MPH, and I have the bonus of WAY better pickup with a "new" first gear and better gears!

Sounds like the boat came to life, cool it worked out, having the lower first really helped, especially twice as low because of the 2spd. Good for you.

Re: My other passion...65' Impala SS

For sure! I'm really happy with how it turned out... so happy in fact, it has spurred a bit of confidence for me. My twin brother and I have abet to see which of our cars is quicker in the 1/4 mile. We have had these cars since we were 16. Neither is fast (by taday's standards) but that doesn't stop us from competing with each other ;-) I will be posting results and showing video of race too!

His:
67' Mustang Coupe
2800lbs
289, newly rebuilt, stock spec cam
2 barrel carb,
All original drivetrain/accessories
c4 auto tranny (3spd)
2.73 gears
stock exhaust, exhaust manifolds
26" OD tires

Mine:
65' Impala SS
Newly rebuild 327 bored .40 over
461 Camel hump heads
Comp cams 206/214 @.50 duration
9.5-1 +/- compression
Edelbrock 1406 carb, performer manifold
HEI
Headers into turbo mufflers
3.73 Gears
200-4r transmission
3600lbs
27" OD tires

(Full write up here for anyone interested or here on FB)

Thoughts? Do I have a chance?

Make the 67 Mustang a 65 and I have the same car... same engine/carb/rear end gear, and let me tell you... that combo is SLOW for a V-8 car. It will still "go" but it needs much steeper gears... BUT without having OD, it's a great crusing set up, just sucks for off the line performance. You *should* win. I feel confident my 67 C10 with 350/700R/3.73 "feels" quicker than my mustang... but toss a 4 barrel on it, cam it, and some steeper rear gears and that little pony 289 can haul some serious ass for an old car.

I believe it.
I have driven his car many times, and it runs really nice. The only reason I think I have a chance is his 2 barrel carb. If he put a 4 barrel on there, I wouldn't be so confident.
PS, his cam is custom ground, unsure exact specs, but much stronger than stock....
