Re: '56 Chevy Panel build (SLP)
Very busy weekend with the panel truck. Sent wife to the lake and had all weekend to get the front suspension done. Well other than having the bags in place. Got a ton of pics, but want the guys at the Nationals show first look. After that I'll post them all up.
I will say this Justin at Scott's was on it. First we changed up some stuff to get more travel. By stuff I mean a-arms (2 sets) and crossmember. Also, even on the long weekend he still answered my emails quickly. With out that kind of support I would be pushing it to have the front done for the show next weekend. (Justin they will be on there way to you next week.) Friday I started with this. then to this Built this. Now today we have this and this.

Re: '56 Chevy Panel build (SLP)
Thanks, I'm still planning on using a 5.3, it is a long way off yet. After I get the suspension stage done it's time to build up the bank again.

Re: '56 Chevy Panel build (SLP)
Nice panel. My Dad & I had built a 57 Chevy panel back when I was in high school (about 20 years ago). Back then the thing to do was Camaro clip them. With the tools & skills I've acquired over the years I plan to help my Son with building his pickup (56 GMC) in a couple of years. He's wanting to bag it, chop the top, section the hood & a whole lotta other things.

Re: '56 Chevy Panel build (SLP)
Bolt pattern is different. You would need the pattern changed or run adapters.

Levi drives his '50 down around 3-4 hours I'm guessing and the next day he gets on the dyno for 3 pulls and then I turn around and he's doing the burnout competion with the new tires he drove down in. Crazy... I'll post pics of the panel and the area that all the members trucks were in later today. Then I'll post what all I did to the panel the weekend before to get it to the show. I'm still beat

Re: '56 Chevy Panel build (SLP)
As promised here’s what went on Labor Day weekend. I sent the wife off to the lake with my family, so I had no interruptions.
Friday started off with a bare stock frame and the new narrowed cross member that Scott’s made me up and got right out to me. I wanted more travel and decided that I needed to go narrower and longer arms to get it. Justin at Scott’s is awesome, more on this later. Next bolted everything up to find out where my max drop would be so I could locate the cross member at the right height. Then came out the 2x4 3/16 tubing for the new frame rails. Made a step up for the new rails so the cross member would be located at the right height. Lots of in and out, squaring, cutting, welding, and grinding. Here’s a neat little tool I made for finding the length of the angled pieces.

Re: '56 Chevy Panel build (SLP)
Sunday out come more sawzall blades. I think I ended up going through close to 20 blades on all the new front end work.
I still need to dress up the old to new. Next came bolting the new a arms back on.

Re: '56 Chevy Panel build (SLP)
Ok here's where Justin rocks even more. Got everything mounted and realized I didn't have any lugnuts for the wheels. So decided to go ahead and just sit them in place to see my accomplishment. Jacked up the lower a-arm and it stopped 3" short of max drop that was planned. I about got sick. What's wrong did I not measure right, no everything was good until I put on the rotor. Now what...crap.
I take a ton of pic and head up to the parents computer. Can't get the pics onto there compute. So I just send Justin a panic email what do I do? Bigger brakes ($$$), trim a-arms, what are my options? Leave the computer find all the beer dad had at the house and head to a friend for a break. I'm thinking long weekend it's like 4:00 pm and I'm not going to get an answer for a couple day. Monday morning I've got an email from Justin on the holiday. He says they have to bevel them sometimes. Now parent show up and I'm able to get the picures to Justin. Email him again and ask how much is safe He gets right back to me and now here's what I've got. I didn't have to take off as much as I thought. Now everything goes back fine after a little trimming.

Re: '56 Chevy Panel build (SLP)
How did you address bump steer with a narrower crossmember and longer control arms? A different rack?

The crossmember we did for Jared the lower a-arm pivot is 24 1/2 and the lower inner knuckle on the rack is 24 1/2 and the rack is not narrowed this is the narrowest you can go with out doing a custom power rack. There is no bump steer Justin |
