Re: What did you do yo your truck today??
Update from last weekends work on the truck, finished cutting my bed supports out of 2 inch schedule 40. Going to tack these in and pull the bed back off to fab up some lateral supports for the wheel wells.
Also picked up a set of shorty headers and removed the Y pips so shes lays as far as possible for now. |

Re: What did you do yo your truck today??
Last summer I was told by a mechanic that he couldn't align my truck because the upper control arm mount knockouts needed knocking out. They wanted $250 for the job, in addition to the cost of alignment. Thanks to this forum, I already knew what he meant and what the fix was. Yesterday I picked up a set of alignment cam bolts from Orielly's and put them in. Turns out PO had already done the knockouts and the problem was that one of the cam bolts was just rusted and stuck against the control arm mount. After some cursing, wrenching, and alot of PB Blaster got it free. Went ahead and cleaned up the mounts/control arms and replaced all the bolt/cams since I had them. Not a bad job at all with an impact wrench. Now for an alignment tomorrow.
Yesterday I also put helicoils in the transmission tail shaft replacing stripped transmission mount threads. Truck had no transmission mount bolts in it when I bought it. Again, thanks to this forum, I bought the right size bolts and installed them about a year ago. Felt a little mushy going in so I had doubts about the threads. You guessed it! Checked under the truck the other day and bolts missing again. Had to jack up the transmission, unbolt the crossmember, move it out of the way to get access to drill the holes out, use the tap from the helicoil kit, and install the helicoils and new bolts. Tightened down just fine! Today I pulled the ECM, ECM mount, and Blower to do clean the a/c evaporator as described in this thread: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=410384 As described, with some patience, it was a relatively easy job although my evap was not nearly as nasty as some of the pics I've seen. The trick in getting the blower out was to turn it so that one of the flat edges nearest the power connectors on the blower was pointing up and pry it under the edge of the dash. Popped out without any breakage, used the spray foam condensor cleaner from home depot ($5) and rinsed with a garden hose spray nozzle, wiped everything down as best I could and put a new blower motor in (bearing was failing and noisy). Buttoned up, smells better, don't get a huge amount more air but definitely better than it was! This pic, indicated by the tape measure, shows the edge to rotate toward the bottom dash lip to get the blower out. This pic shows the view thru the glovebox opening with glove box, ecm, ecm mount, and blower motor removed This pic show the evaporator after the foam/water cleaning treatment, there really wasn't much to clean out. I got lucky Great weekend working on old red! Been thinking about these projects for quite awhile now so it feels good to get it done.

Re: What did you do yo your truck today??
well last week I fixed my lighter so now I can use my cell phone charger again. I also found that the tray my computer sits on was very loose., so I tightened it and tie wrapped the computer to it and so far it seems to have fixed my problem with one side of my throttle body on working right. just yesterday I had to replace the headlight switch and the pigtail the plugs into it. so its been a productive couple of weeks.

Re: What did you do yo your truck today??
Thought i would do a simple tire rotation yesterday because the front tires were cupped and pretty noisy, well it had McGuard lugs on it and as things go one will always be a ***** (it striped), so I took my trusty hammer and chisel and split it off and through the other 3 in the trash.
Ordered a new Radio and speakers off Amazon to day.

Re: What did you do to your truck today??
Lets see. Went to change oil and found a leaking oil cooler line (lower) and replaced. Changed oil and found a leaking block (R/S headgasket) so today I will be removing my heads /intake and other such wonderful things and because im removing the upper Im going to replace my fuel rail/regulator and having my injectors cleaned and possibly replaced. Good thing my Christmas shopping is done.

Re: What did you do yo your truck today??
changed the cab mounts today
the rubber mounts themselves were well worn, and the metal washers and spacers were all rusted replaced with the energy suspension mounts took about five hours

Re: What did you do yo your truck today??
Bought it
96 Chev 3500 crew long bed 454. Came with a shell and 5th wheel hitch. 136xxx miles. The guy took very good care of in mechanically. Recent tranny, diffs and motor services. Recent brake job including master cylinder. Recent AC work/recharge. Basically all the little issues common with these have been addressed. New tires. Recipts for all the work he has done since 90K. Should drag my trailer pretty good. Does have some body blemishes but thats no big deal. Need the driver door aligned possibly new pins, common problem. Anyone have a really good fix? |

Re: What did you do yo your truck today??
Nice looking truck it sure is a long one. To me the door alignment is a priority thing as the longer you put it off the more damage can be done to the hinges, striker and latch. If done soon it involves only pins and bushings a cheap fix. If you unplug the wiring harness and drive out the old pins the door comes right off but have a strong friend as it is very heavy. I do autobody for a living and do the doors by myself with a office chair that adjust for hight but they are some of the heaviest doors I have removed in 40 years.

Thanks for the tips, I am also a body guy although not working in the industry anymore. I can handle pins and bushings but it is so common on these that I was wondering if there is a better fix that will last longer, better hinge set from something else maybe? |

I ran across this site http://www.hingekits.com/search/Chev...eries/4%20Door They also sell oversize bushings which might be a way to go, given more wall thickness for wear. Anyone ever order from them? I will also be waiting till it warms up a bit before I tackle it, or until I get enough of our crap unpacked and out of my garage that I can do it in there. Oh ya as far as what I did today......... my tune-up parts should be arriving so that is going to get done next week. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor and fuel filter all Delco parts. Plus I picked up oil and a filter to do an oil change and already did a sea foam treatment in the fuel and oil. Should be in tip top shape after the tune-up. After all that is done I may do a royal purple changeover on the diffs and tranny, or I may just drive it till spring when it isn't so cold to work on it. |

Re: What did you do yo your truck today??
Yesterday we put the transmission into the 93. During the install we desided to put a new filter in it. We discovered that my $350 transmission is actually a fresh rebuilt 4l60e. .It also has a shift kit in it. I'm really stoked about being able to drive it now. Jaws.

[QUOTE=Dustinmk4;6488959]Thanks for the tip. I was reading that lithium grease when installing and at every oil change helps.
I ran across this site http://www.hingekits.com/search/Chev...eries/4%20Door Seems kind of expensive I think I got mine from NAPA. The spring tool Harbor Freight sells for around $7 I just noticed you live in Utah my son and his gamily live in Layton, he is a ROTC Professor at U of U in Logan

Re: What did you do yo your truck today??
Swapping hinges would be a huge project as they are welded to the cowl and you would have to remove the fenders and probably the dash to be able to bolt a hinge on for test fit even if you wanted to weld them on after. I have had better luck with the bushings that are knurled around the outside rather than the smooth ones. I think they are more bronze and less brass in the makeup and last a little longer. When you get good at you will be able to change them in half an hour.

Pulled the temporary bag setup off the front. Installed drop spindles and cut 1 full coil off the stock springs. Moving the truck status from yard art to weekend cruiser. Soon to be a DD again.
