Re: my official 68 shortstep ls1 thread (lots of pics)
looks like your moving at a good pace... one ?, what about the back sides of the fenders... are you thinking of the same exterior black, or like a undercoating (like under the cab?)

Re: my official 68 shortstep ls1 thread (lots of pics)
I would recommend undercoating on the backside of the fenders. I was going to pressure wash them and clean them up and spray a rust preventer and then spray body schultz under them again. This will help protect when a rock slings out of one of your tires from putting an "outy" dent in the fenders.

Re: my official 68 shortstep ls1 thread (lots of pics)
Just had delivered some new killer sanding blocks too that will come in handy with these fenders. The longest one I bought was 36'' long. I spent 300.00 on a set of them. Can't wait to use them on these long surfaced fenders that are rounded. They really do not have a flat spot on them.

Re: my official 68 shortstep ls1 thread (lots of pics)
Yep, finishing stripping the fenders. They should be done by tomorrow evening and then epoxy prime. The hood will be next and then the bodywork will start on the rig. Nothing done this weekend and I had to go to San Antonio. Grandmother in ICU. She is 83 yrs old and not doing well. Will post some more pics tomorrow. Working on 3 at once and when time permits I try to squeeze in time for the wifes.

Re: my official 68 shortstep ls1 thread (lots of pics)
Here are some updated pics. Nothing much, just the hood and fender that was stripped to metal too. One fender was trash after stripping a gallon of bondo out of it. Going to start welding up all of the holes first then start body repairs on this one too.

Re: my official 68 shortstep ls1 thread (lots of pics)
How about these pics of what is getting painted here today. It is our new 2008 dually wrecker. We have 3 more coming in too. This one is going to be customized to show up a local shop in the area. What do you think. I will post pics when it is done for you guys. My buddy Jason Barnett with Barnett Pinstriping is laying out the flames.

Re: my official 68 shortstep ls1 thread (lots of pics)
No not yet Hyde. We were busy catching up on old stuff. The wrecker is cleared, now sand the truck again, have Jason come in and outline the flames and letter the doors and bury it all in clear again and then buff. Here are some pics of the flames for you!

Re: my official 68 shortstep ls1 thread (lots of pics)
68 short step:
I may have missed some of the items that you have covered in this very well done post, but I have some questions. First, I understand that you used aluminum paint; but what paint did you use on the motor and tranny? (rattle can or mix from a paint supplier?) Second, how did those headers work out for clearance? I am looking for headers to fit the LS-1 that I have for my 68 project. I was considering the S&P headers. Third, where did the air intake setup come from; did you make it or is it a factory setup that you have adapted? (If you made it, where did you get the tubing?) Can you eleborate on the steam vent on the water pump? Where did you take the line after connecting to the pump? I am trying to figure out all of what I need for the LS-1 to make it good. I already have a "Be-Cool Radiator fitted for a LS series motor. I haven't even started thinking about a fuel tank--looks like the Fuel Cell Guy did you right. The truck that I have has had a lot of work done on the suspension and the body smoothed, then they stopped on it over 10 years ago. The cab is chopped 3" and the bed is smoothed. I am updating the front suspension with tubular A-arms from CCP and the rear is already a coil-over setup from Pete and Jakes. |
