Now it's really starting to look like something!!!

I'm beat. It was 90-95+ every day I worked on this. I had to dodge thunderstorms and got bit by skeeters about a thousand times. Back to work tomorrow (sarcastic "yay") so it may be a week or two before I finish the roof but at least it's up!

I also have to get out the chainsaw...

Half is on a slab the other half is not. I want to try to keep one side critter free. The other side will be a gravel floor.

Nope, it's fun doing it all yourself. My wife steadied the trusses as I pulled them up with a rope, other than that it was all basically me.

Had to work Saturday... BOOOOOO... LOL

I spent most of the day squaring up the trusses and locking them down in place. I also built my door frames/headers. That took a lot longer than I thought it would.

I hope to have all the siding up soon and start on the roof overhangs.

More progress. I'm working a crazy new schedule and won't be free until next weekend, it will be 60 hours over the next 7 days, but then I'll have a long 5 day weekend and I hope to have the roof done.

1. The front face is done.

2. One overhang done... now that I've got it figured out the other 3 will go much faster!

3 & 4. Backside is up. I also did some serious tree trimming to get the branches off the roof! No worries on how high I cut, there's at least another 20-25' of canopy on those trees!

5. The pile is actually much bigger than it appears to be.

Hopefully the next pics will be of the finished roof!!!

Seriously... I hardly drive the 67 anymore. It's not because I don't want to, but because it is literally a total pain in the ass to get it out of the garage! I should be able to empty my garage out of all parts and lawn equipment and get back to just the bird, the truck, and tools!

You do amazing work. I fancy myself also as a hands-on guy who loves to do home remodeling, and I have to say that you are one talented dude. My older brother is the same way, and we always kid each other that "you're the kind of guy I want to BUY a house from". You have turned a diamond in the rough to the jewel of the neighborhood. As a homeowner, I would be proud to have a neighbor like you.

While the finished product may look nice, y'all don't see how many times I screwed up in between (on most everything I do) But if something is wrong, I will rip it off/apart whatever and redo it, even if it means spending more $. That's one of the reasons this roof is taking so long. I've had to go back and adjust stuff or make changes. Now that I finally have it nailed down (pun intended) the back side will go MUCH quicker. The only problem is that it is absolutely hot as hell here. That's the reason I've only gotten as far as I have. It's been at, near, or over 100* the past week.

Anyway, here's where it's at now. Never done the architectural shingles. I watched a couple online videos and read the instructions on the bag, I've got it figured out now.

I'll basically be working/sleeping the next 2.5 weeks, so it will be a while before more progress

Almost forgot I sent my dad some updates via phone pics. They suck but here's a few more pics.

1. I got one side almost done. Plywood is staggered. Drip edge started.

2. Started putting the shingles on yesterday. Only got a few rows up when a storm blew in.

3. Yeah, pretty typical of this past week.

I had a couple days to piddle. Took care of a bunch of lawn stuff too. I have to work 60 hours over the next 7 days. Yay... but by the end of August, it should have a roof!!!

1. The last pain in the butt thing to do was the overhangs. DONE! Both sides! (Don't worry about the trim matching up... I do have a plan for that!)

2. Some thing's missing here...

3. Ohhhhhh yeah, I cut that tree down behind the shed. I didn't want to, but by the time I cut it back enough to clear the roof it looked sad and would have probably died. The trunk was also starting to push against my fence anyway. (See pics above for reference.)

4. Check it out, my little lelands are alive and kickin'! I think the one second from the left has even grown over a foot. They were looking pretty sickly back in late May, even with daily watering, but with all the crazy rain we got in June and July they're nice and healthy looking.

That's OK I'm sure most people only check out the pics and don't read any of my banterings I do it too for the truck build threads. There's just too much to read for my ADD to handle

The roof, the roof, the roof is ON! No, it's not on fire, well, it felt like it was when it hit up in the mid 90's.

I piddled along the past few mornings. I got all the plywood on, then the trim boards, painted the trim boards, then the drip edge, then tar paper, then shingles... and I had to stop by about 3pm each day because that's when I lost my shade and these shingles DO NOT like to be stepped on when new and hot. I then finished off today by putting new U joints in the rear drive shaft of my Z71. It started developing a weird vibration, it felt like the u joints and it was. The front (yoke) u joint was so shot that all of the needle bearings in all 4 of the caps had somehow fallen/blew out. She's vibration free now Oh, and the driveshaft is aluminum. I never knew that. I swear the steel yoke weighed more than the whole driveshaft. kinda cool.

And you know, it's not all that high... but it sure can feel that way at times...

Most of these are cell pics. I lost my camera again... I thought I left it in the truck. I think my dogs took it again. Damn dogs. Always farting when I'm around and stealing my crap. If they don't stop stealing my tools and placing them back in the last place I used them they're headed to the pound!

I didn't really have a good angle to take pics from. Plywood down and I finished the backside shingles and all yesterday.

I had an interesting text conversation with my dad:

And just to clear something up... a few people have asked, as well as a couple neighbors... "Why didn't I just build a shop/garage." My response is... "I ain't done yet, that's coming too..." In all honesty, that's more like 10 years away, but I even have the area picked out

Anyway. Getting wordy with my posts tonight... sorry... I'm just so happy this thing finally has a roof and that my Z is fixed. I'd been worried it was something major, but it was only $30 worth of U joints.

I took these with my wife's awesome Canon rebel. Not sure why the coloring looks weird in the last pic, it looks great/even in person.

Last round. I guess it's time to figure out how to build some doors!

1. I'm really proud of this pic! Everything came out so square and even!

2 & 3. Just backside shots of roof. Like I mentioned above. There isn't a single area on my property where you can see ANY of this side. You have to climb through brush and briars to see it (or a ladder).

For anyone who wants to try the architectural shingles, they're awesome, but have some patience. There's a lot of mixing and matching to get the right look and if your roof is as small as mine you have a lot of waste and a lot of cutting. I should have had plenty of shingles to finish the job (estimated extra 15%) but I still had to run to Lowes today for one last bundle. I used about half of it. Oh well.

Back at it for a bit. Sure was cold today at a whopping 61 degrees.

I started to build my doors. I used 1x4 cedar boards as the framing. I also used construction adhesive on everything in addition to nailing it all. By the time I put the trim on the front they're pretty darn sturdy.

I left 1" of the top as an overlap for the door to close against (the outside top trim piece closes against it) and I did the same for the doors, the right door has an overhang of the siding plywood and the left door has an overhang on the trim so they overlap and close tight.

I also took the time to make sure the "lines" in the door panels match the "lines" in the panels above.

It's amazing how much this crap costs. Each door is going to be about $90 with the cedar, the siding (takes 1 sheet per door) all the trim, handles, lock, and hinges. I bought what should finish up the outside and I think I'm up to $2,800. Still not too bad considering how awesome it is.

I ran out of daylight so not quite finished yet...
