Re: SGTUSMC '59 build

I see that you used the brake booster out of the donor truck, did you use the brake pedal assembly as well? If so can you post a pic of how that bolted up above the column?

Thanks

Re: SGTUSMC '59 build

Sarg looks great so far.

Can you tell me what the dimensions are from the outer lip to outer lip on the fleetside bed. I have a ZR2 rear axle and I don't know if it's going to work (I'm in the market for a 58-59 short bed).

Thanks, Kent

Here you go man, Sorry for the long delay. This is measuring from the rear of the fender forward on the crease.

I have the bed mounted on the frame. So It's kind of hard to get a direct measurement right above the tire because of the frame and muffler. So I measured forward of the tire. The fleetside bed has a 1 inch inner lip around the wheel well. I measured the bed from outer fender to outer fender. So subtract 2" for the lip or you could trim the lip if your to close.

Yes I'm use'n both the booster and ped assembly. I'm still in the mock up stage the the pedals. I'm sure I'll chage it around of few more times. Take a look at this guy's Fleetside build. There's a lot of good info there. He's also use'n booster & ped assy. Hope this helps.

Wow thanks for the link! On page 5 it looks like they left the factory dash brace, and cut the donor brace to fit. Looks like a great solution.

Re: SGTUSMC '59 build

My neighbor gave me (20) 2ft by 2ft, 10g flat plates. So I decided to use them to smooth out the firewall and new floors. I cut out one side and had the wife weld it in. She did one side and got burned. So she's done. It was nice while it lasted.

Re: SGTUSMC '59 build

sgtusmc, Free metal always is great. She did a good job welding it in. My wife maybe was in my garage 10 times and she usually says about the smoke or the smell isn't good for me. She usually leaves pretty quick but weld no way! Your wife is a keeper.

Re: SGTUSMC '59 build

We had some family over today, so my wife's welding was kind of her proving to her brother she could weld. I wish she was really into it. I'll take what I can get though. Most of the time she's just hanging out in the garage reading a book.
I'm going to be build/patching the drivers floor and both kick panels in a few days. What are your thoughts about using spray foam inside the kick panels once there painted? I'm going to delete the vents and build speaker buckets out of the 10g plate. I'm thinking it would prevent rust and deaden the sound.

Re: SGTUSMC '59 build

I think spray foam is good for sound deading on the back of panels. If you try to enclose the space condensation over time will get trapped and start rusting instead of running down to the bottom and out the drip hole or turning back into vapor as it heats up. I am wondering what kind of shape all of the homes they are using foam to fill the wall and ceiling cavities up are going to be in after a few years. I kept my vents, we have quite a few days up here where that is all you need.

Re: SGTUSMC '59 build

I did the back of my corner panels, but ended up shaving it to about 1/2" to fit and have some clearance. hadn't thought about the back of the kick panels.

Re: SGTUSMC '59 build

I used Al's liner to deaden the sound and help with rustproofing on mine. Used body tint to keep it from standing out.

The 59's been out in the driveway for the last few days. I went out to work on it today, and found this on the dash. I'm not sure what's worse- the low balling or the fact he opened my door to put his note inside. Your a brave man Frank!...haha

Re: SGTUSMC '59 build

"Make your day" LOL. 16 years ago I had a 41 chevy DD, 200K miles, all original, faded paint but drove ok up to 45 mph. One day I was out working in the yard and a kid about 14 came up to me and very seriously offered me $200 for it because it was "really old". I was nice and told him I would need a little more then that. He came back a few times and we talked about old cars while I wrenched away and he got realistic about what he need to do. I did offer to take a look at any he was interested in to keep him from getting hurt but he must have moved because he quit coming around.

Re: SGTUSMC '59 build

Nobody every comes up to my little honda and leaves a note in it.
Just be glad that you have something that somebody else wants. I have a neighbor that has stopped by and asked about mine, that I once kept in my open shed. I have enclosed my shed now. Makes me happy that someones else may want what I have.
No it wasn't me that left the note!

Re: SGTUSMC '59 build

I had planned on calling him back. However, he showed up today. Not at all what I had expected. He looked like Christopher Lloyd from Back to the Future, and twice as nutty. I ended up opening the garage so he could look at it again. By this point I had told him the truck wasn't for sale a hand full of times. He was having a bidding war against himself at one point. He was asking questions, then answering them. I felt bad for the guy. Not all his friggin dog's are barking! I'm happy he stopped by though, he got me outta bed and in the garage.
I'm going to frame the note and hang it in the garage. Any time I'm down, I'll read it. Hell, anything's better than being that guy!
