Re: Project -underfunded - '68 shortstep/carb'd LSx/200-4r build

actually my trans builder provided the cable. It had all the various adjustments and a square OEM style plastic mounting point which wound up fitting my TCI carb bracket perfect. I have a Lokar throttle cable and was going to use a Lokar carb bracket but decided to go with this TCI one to keep the trans happy. Also mounted an adapter to the carb linkage that changes the linkage ratio for the TV cable. The TCI bracket isnt fancy but it works great. WOT has the tv cable about 1/4" away from its stop. I'll get pics of it all.

OK...here's some of the latest pics.

heater cores lower pipe busted loose so I decided to pull the heater box apart:

some of the stainless steel brake line going in:

and the trans builder supplied TV cable, TCI carb bracket, and Lokar throttle cable:
plan on reversing the throttle return springs.

Hey your cab looks like it's in really great shape. Don't look like it's gathered any rust at all. Where did you pick up the brake lines? Those look really nice.

Re: Project -underfunded - '68 shortstep/carb'd LSx/200-4r build

thanks 85burb, it even had a Lokar carb bracket...but I decided function was better then beauty. :lol;

thanks mcbassin, it was redone back in the 90's. I found one bad spot in the heater box area that had been repaired. I plan on doing body and paint in a year or so, and just patch things as i go until then.

I wound up going with Inline Tube for the brake lines and stuff. I ordered the hardware (fittings, clamps, etc) yesterday...forgot about it when I ordered the full brake line set. Guess I thought they were included.

What fittings and clamps were not included? Where did you order them? directly from inline? thanks

Re: Project -underfunded - '68 shortstep/carb'd LSx/200-4r build

mcbassin...when you buy the lines...your just buying the lines. They sell their clamps, fittings, and brass T's all separately. Would up spending another $95 on all mentioned plus a rear s.s. flex brake hose and S&H.

85burb...it had this carb bracket in until I got to looking at the TV cable I had and what pieces I had and didn't have (would have needed whats called the kickdown bracket to go with it) and by mixing what I had I didn't need to buy anything else. The TCI bracket is deff. sturdier and Lokar cables are built nicely.

here's what the Lokar bracket looked like. I should mention...my TV cable had both the slider type attachment and the black plastic clip-on, both using the barrell type cable lock...and after having a failure... I have a thing about plastic in my linkages. Also, I left some length on that TV cable for now...just so if I do decide to move/change something I'll have the length to do it.

http://lokar.com/interior_pages/prod...es/srk4000.jpg

...and here's how it would be w/the kickdown mounting bar on the bracket
http://lokar.com/interior_pages/prod...00-drawing.jpg

edited the pics to urls.....someones not allowing the linking...

irritates me when sites do that...here's a pic from Summit.

TV cable adds a second bar that drops down...making an upside down V sort of.

Oh i see. Looks nice. Yes it is just about the worst thing when pics dont show up. Like the ones you really want to see like some one just put new motor in and it looks like a tiny box with an stupid red x in it. Really blows the hole moment.

Re: Project -underfunded - '68 shortstep/carb'd LSx/200-4r build

Pulled about a mile or more of electric tape off of my trucks external (under hood) wiring harnesses today. What a mess! Looking at the wire it looks like someone bought new harnesses (except rear harness)... then hacked them all up!

I cut out a bad patch in the rear lighting harness and soldered/heat shrinked in some new wire then wrapped with friction tape. I have the harness installed now but not locked down.

I know....I know...I'll try to post the pics tomorrow.

nothing exciting...but heres the pics:

repairing 2' of the harness for the rear lighting. Spliced, soldered, shrink wrapped, over-shrink wrapped, and then friction tape wrapped:

some of the wiring mess after I pulled it all apart:

the new "news".........inline tubes brake line fittings, T's, and rear s.s. flex hose should arrive today, a few new tools (3/8" TAP to fix a bung + 1/4" NPT TAP cause I don't have one) on Monday or Tuesday...and.....B&M Truck Megashifter on Tuesday or Wednesday. I decided I didn't want to wait for it and fight the column shifter at the track.

Re: Project -underfunded - '68 shortstep/carb'd LSx/200-4r build

Oh no......wiring is certainly not my calling.....since I'm color blind!
Didn't really want to have to spin the coin for a shifter...but it was necessary for track use.

I installed the O2 sensors for the UEGO gages and routed the cables into the cab. Looks like I'm gonna leave the MSD box under the hood as its too much harness to bring into the cab. Got the starter wires wrapped and routed, and then roughed up and spray bombed semi flat black under the dash to cover all the blue...since I'm going in with all black carpet and trim. It will look good enough with everything in... until I pull it all apart again to paint it properly in a year or so.

Re: Project -underfunded - '68 shortstep/carb'd LSx/200-4r build

Looks great. Wireing is deff not my calling. I start out doing good job then get in a hurry and just do it to get it done. You should see under my dash..... Scares me sometimes. Do you think they gave you enough uego wires. I have like a 10 foot coil of it zip tied to my steering colum under dash.

Thanks,
So if you don't mind me asking, what does a "complete" SS brake line setup cost you from inline? I'm at the point of needing to decide what to buy. I appreciate your help.

Re: Project -underfunded - '68 shortstep/carb'd LSx/200-4r build

well the full s.s. brake line set is $185. I don't have the invoice in front of me...but I think I spent another $75 or so on a rear s.s. hose (got the 2 front s.s. hoses with my CPP brake kit), all the brass T's, all the fittings, and all the clips... + S&H.

So....something like $250-$260? Making it $300 or so with all 3 (2 front-1 rear) s.s. hoses plus the s.s. line set and all the hardware.

more parts in.....shifter, brake fittings, and a couple of TAPs and TAP wrench.
Now I can finish fuel system, brake system, and engine/trans linkages. I'm also working on the electrical....so it won't be long before I can prime this thing up and light the fire!
