Re: Crossing over, the 65 rebuild.

Let the games begin. My buddy is staying late rebuilding a carb , so I thought I would occupy his rack and get a jump start on Saturday suspension fest. Ill work through lunch tomorrow (Friday) getting the wheels, drums and rear diff cover off and drained then work a few hours tomorrow night. I'm hoping to have everything blown apart front and rear with all the new stuff laid out behind the truck on the floor by the end of tomorrow night. Lot's of drilling plates, A arms, air line andale clamps and layout on Saturday. I was trying to get things like air tank and compressor brackets made and installed before this weekend, but the last few weekends have been a blessing having been surrounded by out of state family and friends. can't trade that for fab work. Taking Monday and Tuesday off to come to work and hopefully drive it out Tuesday afternoon.

Re: Crossing over, the 65 rebuild.

Mine wasn't frame off, just pretty clean. tll74's truck is a frame off and really nice! Here is Dan's truck ( buddy of mine who's tool box I'm slumming out of this weekend) and some shots of his truck he just finished. All new interior, 454 all stock looking, 8" F*%D wheels, tach dash and a bunch of other stuff he bought from tll74.

It was the first truck he bought new in 1976 and still has it. It has morphed from a 1/2 ton 2 wheel drive to a 3/4 ton framed. 1 ton axled, 454 lifted swamper tire'd Dune and Mud monster that needed a new engine, cab and repaint/restore. We have been picking away at his most nights and weekends too.

Don't mean to steal any thunder from your truck but that 76' is the baddest square body I have ever seen. Awesome.

Oh yeahhhhhhhhhh.........

I am dying to see pictures of the suspension work you guys are doing on the '65!! That's a really, really nice truck.

Love the '76, too!! I like the look, and the color combo is killer.

Re: Crossing over, the 65 rebuild.

Thanks guys. Dans 76 is a looker! Straight red toner over red sealer over red primer. It glows in the sun light. We have all painted a piece of it at work. It was the fastest one guy overhaulin I've seen. He took A week off from work and did a bare cab swap, engine swap, painted a used bed and swapped his dors and fenders from his former truck to this one. The chassis, trans, doors and fenders are the ony saved components. The rest was restored and installed in 10 days. Little stuff was picked at for the last few weeks. He did a nice job and has taught me a lot!

Re: Crossing over, the 65 rebuild.

I'm quite sure that truck knows how to do donuts! I won't tell if you don't. I've seen pics of it fully in golfed in smoke but not till a year ago or so. He is 24 now and those pics were when he was in high school which I wasn't allowed to see back then. That floor looks NICE, he'll like it. It goes to Kaiser next to raise the front to match the back. Dan's truck looks AWESOME. Darn..it looks like he won't be coming down to see me anymore now that it's done.

Beautiful trucks! Git back ta work! It's amazing how fast one of these front ends comes apart when you know what you're doing and have air tools. Good luck!

Re: Crossing over, the 65 rebuild.

but not knowing what I'm doing being the first air bag set up on a truck or car ever, I made pretty decent headway today. I started on the front and got the control arms drilled for the plates, made a trip to the parts store for a list of a few things including some 90 degree 1/4 air fittings for the upper fronts. I drilled a hole in the side of the crossmember and shielded the air line with fuel hose. Ran it from under the crossmember cup m out the hole, through the frame and safely tucked into a rubber clamp. I mounted the spindles and the started on the rear. More drilling at the rear uppers, installed fittings, ran lines from all the bags to the front drivers side while Dan fabbed a bracket to mount the tank and compressor after finishing up working on his truck. You can see how far up the axle sits without 2 inch blocks! I have 2 more inches in the notch, but the pumpkin just kisses the bed floor. Maybe a pocket or bubble in the floor to allow the diff to poke through to get the extra 2 inches lower at rest? Anyone doing this?

How much room do you have in the wheel well for the tire if let the pumpkin come up in the bed ?

About 2 1/2 inches. 235/75/15s on stock 73 4x4 wheels. Right now when the pumpkin touches the under bed wood, the axle tube touches the exhaust. I see a sawzall in my future. I can't just leave the 2 inch block kit in the box right? If I install the blocks, cut a hole in the bed and fab a nice speed bubble, the rear tires will have about 1/2 inch before they rub the inner liner at the top. I still have a couple inches from the inner bedside flange to the face of the tire too. Skinny tires are great to drop trucks onto! I really wanted to pancake the extra crossmember that LT1burb loaned me, but after seeing the PO welding the engine mounts to the frame and the crossmember it changed my mind. I didn't want a month long project this December like I did last year with the burb. I'm trying to have this truck rolling on Tuesday and driving 200 miles for the NW meet up next weekend.
