Re: My Dusty 71 GMCe Electruck
Its so neat what you've done to your truck, I feel like when you finally get it dialed in to where you are going to stand pat it really deserves a bit of an overall facelift, make it prettier-ish.

yes it's over a 100 miles away not currently the truck won't make it that far, but maybe its a foreshadowing of yet another more bigger battery pack upgrade, who knows ?! |

Re: My Dusty 71 GMCe Electruck
well boyz, she's been running and driving great, so I decided to rip her apart, that's right it's time to replace the world's most obnoxious aftermarket shifter
so first the center console had to come out |

Re: My Dusty 71 GMCe Electruck
and then I decided that it was easier to just yank the turtle shell transmission cover than fandangle with just removing the B&M shifter off of it

nice thing about working on a truck, is that you can use the bed as a work bench
you all agree or disagree ? |

Re: My Dusty 71 GMCe Electruck
pretty sure volumes have been written on the low hump (automagical transmission covers) vs the high hump manual gear box ones, so I just want to share a mandatory side by side stare and comparison I stole off the InterWebs somewhere

Re: My Dusty 71 GMCe Electruck
so made this jig last night when I was still considering using the stock 2007 OEM Lexus GS450h automatic floor shifter
it's a crude setup but it demonstrates how far back the actual floor shifter sits behind the transmission, fine in a car, not so fine in a truck, or is it? |

Re: My Dusty 71 GMCe Electruck
I was hoping to have it sit right about here, in order to retain the center console, hence the jig to test shortening that shifting rod, and not having to do it whilst laying on my back under the rig

Re: My Dusty 71 GMCe Electruck
Using your magic, could you remove the forward cup holder assembly from the console and slip it over the shifter, keeping the console?

Re: My Dusty 71 GMCe Electruck
What a project Greg, I certainly admire your thought process and determination. You are doing an amazing job. It has certainly been a journey.
I am looking to do something similar on my brake system as you did. What I have read it is a great swap and not too hard to accomplish. I wanted your take on how they work? I understand based on all the other work you have done this was probably a drop in the bucket but nonetheless a cool option. Thanks! Dave

thank you for the kind words Super Dave, I really appreciate it, sometimes hearing the "You Ruined Another One" comments just gets to me through my thin skin, little people know how I find these trucks, I wish I had my original pics of this carcass just sitting there doing nothing, to show them what I started with anywho, are you talking about just a drum to disc conversion or are you considering an iBooster for electronic brakes? if just a disc conversion, then what I learned is that if I was to do it again, I would remove the complete 1967-70 K member or crossmember whatever the cool kids call it, and bolt up a completely assembled (though freshened up) 1971-72 crossmember. and the reason for that is that GM in their infinite wisdom flipped the brake lines around and (and I hope I don't get this backwards) on our 67-70 drum brake trucks the brake lines run behind the crossmember ie closer to the cab, and on the 71-72 disc brake trucks they run in front of the crossmember closer to the radiator, so if you use the 71-72 K member you can go buy stock OEM hard brake lines and rubber lines and they will all reach and just bolt up if you don't want to make your own, but if you do what I did then sure you can make your own hard lines, (and oh buy aint that fun and exciting, ha ha) but the calipers want the rubber lines to run on the opposite side than the drum cylinders ran, again from what I recall best of luck and feel free to drop me a private message any time you like |
