I always liked hearing how people approached a paint job when I was learning how to paint, so I'll give you some unsolicited advice... I'm sure everyone will have their own way of doing things, but I've watched several painters, and have painted a couple things myself, and I've always been told to paint the color that covers the least amount of area first (less masking to do later). So I'd paint the white first.

Thanks Duane I definitely appreciate the advice. I do plan to spray the White first and then mask it off and spray the Red. I've even read that for a newb painter it is better to spray the white and clear it and then tape it off and spray the red and clear. I'm not sure if I should try to do it this way or spray the white then mask it and spray the red and then clear the whole cab at once. Any thoughts?

I like the two-tone idea a lot. I was heavily considering a white roof until I saw the pic of my grandpas truck and it didn't have one. The roof and grill will be subtle enough and make it stand out from the other red ones.

Don't blame you on the LS. I've wanted a BB C10 since I was 15 but afraid I won't drive it as much. LS seems to be the best of both worlds. Unless you are worried about weight I wouldn't spend the premium for a LS1. Get 6.0 and swap a LS6 intake. They can be found pretty cheap.

I'm only thinking about an LS1 if one falls into my lap in the right price range because then I wouldn't have to switch the intake or the oil pan. With my dropmember I have to run the fbody oil pan for proper clearance. I'm most likely going to run a 5.3/6.0, I would rather the 6.0 but it depends on how much I find one for and what the budget looks like at the time.

Thanks Mike, hopefully the paint turns out how I envision it. I know you have done a few LS swaps so I might need to bend your ear a little when the time comes. I know I'll definitely need the help

It's not a bad idea, if I understand it correctly... But, I don't know that I would do it that way. It's nearly impossible to lay the tape down exactly where you need it to be to get both colors to butt against each other. Even if you do a small overlap, after you've painted the red and its layer of clear, you'll have a hard line that isn't easily smoothed out. Color sanding and buffing might take the red off too, if you're trying to flatten the edge. Afterall, you'll have an edge that isn't fully protected by clear, which could cause problems later. Or, you can mask a clear line above the red, then mask the red line that will be pulled off when it comes time for clear so the clear fully covers the red and a little of the white, but you'll still have a hard line in your clear. Blending clear is a pain in the rear... Just remember, the more coats of paint or clear you put against a tape line, the thicker the edge will be and the more you'll notice it.

You could spray the color and only part of the clear you're wanting on the whole truck (2 coats instead of 4, or whatever), then after both colors are on, re-clear the whole truck with the rest of the coats you want. 2 more coats to get to 4 total, or 4 more to get 6, etc.

Or, just spray the base coat of both, then clear it all. This is the way I would do it, but I'm still a newb too. If you miss the re-spray window, let it cure whatever is recommended by the paint company, scuff it and clear it. Ask some other guys what they recommend as well. Someone with more experience can probably give you more detailed info on the subject. I'm sure you'll do fine when you get to that point.

Duane I have done a lot of research and thinking about it and like you stated in your last paragraph I think it's best to spray the white, tape it off and spray the red, unmask and clear the whole thing at once. I think I will have less headaches this way.

This is the way I would recommend doing it. Last one I did was done after work, 2 days in a row. I sprayed the white on the first night, late in the evening. The next day I masked off the white as soon as I got home from work, sprayed the second color (indigo blue in my case), unmasked it after it flashed off and then cleared the whole thing. I got the whole thing sprayed and cleared in a 24 hour window. This was on a complete car. I had to work fast to stay inside of the window for clearing the white, but I got it all done and it came out great. I saw a recent picture of the car and after 20 years it still looks great. The owner never leaves it outside at home and takes really good care of it.

Keith paint both the base coats then clear the whole thing. Like stated before you will create a ton of extra work by trying to clear each color independently!

Thanks for the info Karl, I definitely decided to paint both colors and then clear the whole cab at one time instead of the other way. I'll have to check my products sheets to see what the window is to clear over the basecoat.

Yeah that is the direction I'm going to go, I just can't wait to actually get it painted. Have some more blocking ahead of me first

Oh and I'm definitely going LS, already started collecting some parts for the swap.

Well it's been a busy couple of weeks working on the cab. Haven't posted any pictures because it just would have shown sanding dust The whole cab has been seam sealed and I sprayed 2 more coats of slicksand on. Hopefully this will be my final blocking before color but we'll see how it goes. I'm usually not that lucky.
