I have to agree.

So I turns out that the O'reileys brand rear main seal is not up to OEM standards. I've found several reports of them going out quick, so I'm gonna pick up an OEM one probably tomorrow.

Re: 86 Silverado Father and Son project

Before I forget - make sure to replace exhaust manifold bolts with high quality heat treated bolts. Do not skip on this as it is well known weak point in all LQ/LS installations:

Frrom GM via Alldata

Notes
Bulletin No.: 06-06-01-026
Date: December 22, 2006
INFORMATION

Subject:
L59, LR4, LM4, LM7, LQ4, LQ9, LS1, LS6 New Exhaust Manifold Bolts and Torque Specifications for GEN III Vortec(TM) Engine

Models:
1999-2003 Cadillac Escalade

1999 GMC Forward Control Chassis, P32 R/V Van Chassis, P42 Commercial Chassis
1999-2003 GMC Savana, Siera, Yukon, W-Series Medium Duty Truck
2003 GMC Siera Denali
1998-2002 Pontiac Firebird Formula, Firebird Trans Am

1999-2003 Isuzu N-Series Medium Duty Truck

with GEN III Vortec(TM) Engine (VINs V, G, P, S, T, N, U, Z, - RPOs 4.8L, 5.3L, 5.7L, 6.0L)

A new exhaust manifold bolt and torque specification was introduced to the GEN III Vortec(TM) small block V8 engines beginning with the 2004 model year. When servicing any GEN III Vortec(TM) small bock exhaust manifolds, the exhaust manifold bolts should be replaced.

- P/N 11518860 Exhaust Manifold Bolts

Apply a 5 mm (0.2 in) wide bead of high temperature threadlocker to the threads of the exhaust manifold bolts before installing.

- P/N 12345493 - GM High Temperature High Strength Threadlocker (U.S.)
- P/N 10953488 - GM High Temperature High Strength Threadlocker (Canada)

When tightening the exhaust manifold bolts it should be done with two passes. First tighten the two center bolts on the exhaust manifold. Then tighten the rest of the bolts, alternating from side to side, while working towards the outside bolts.

Install the exhaust manifold bolts.

Refer to the following torque sequence:

Tighten
Tighten to 10 N.m (89 lb in) on the first pass.
Tighten to 20 N.m (15 lb ft) on the final pass.

Thanks for the info RF.

I'm getting ready to wire up the fuse block. I made a diagram for it.

Sweet, you may laminate those and keep them in a safe place for many years down the road when something stupid happens haha

I definitely am going to make some charts to save.

So here is what I think I am going to do with my fuel system. I have read of some people that have done it with no problems. It is running an inline fuel pump in front of the switch for the dual tanks. This is what I have been running for 3 1/2 years with no problems, granted it was a low pressure pump.

The dark grey is high pressure rubber hose and the silver is the original fuel lines off of the 2001 truck. Anyone have major objections?

Crimp and solder? Or just crimp???

As you said - check, check again and insert!

Definitely crimp and solder. And once you insert they're tough to get out without a tool made for it.

Re: 86 Silverado Father and Son project

Update time

I ended up doing what I drew for the fuel system, except I'm using the original steel lines behind the switch from the 86 and high PSI rubber from the tanks switch to the pump and from the pump to the engine. Also probably high PSI rubber for the return. Gonna see how that works out. If it doesn't I'll likely put two in-tank pumps in and run a high pressure switch.

Anyway, it's stabbing time!

More to come in the morning.

Re: 86 Silverado Father and Son project

Well the heart surgery is complete.

All I lack now is hooking up the fuel lines, driveshaft, trans lines, power steering, heater hoses, throttle cable, shifter linkage, and a few wires. Then we should be driving. It's quite a bit to do, but I got time.

Re: 86 Silverado Father and Son project

Are you going to move starter main feeds to passenger side?
AC - you have non AC engine in AC equipped truck - any plans?

Your photos of doing this swap during winter break brings out old memories (of doing the same some 30 years earlier! ) Keep on going.

For the main feeds I got a longer cable and routed it over to the battery, which I left in the original position.

For the AC I'm gonna adapt the compressor to the old dryer, but I'll worry about that in the spring.

Re: 86 Silverado Father and Son project

Alright it's ALIVE!!! I got most of everything wired and hooked up and it fired up first try!

Soldering

I still have to do the exhausts and either shorten or adjust the throttle cable. I also am going to use the TBSS manifolds that my dad got a while back, instead of the truck manifolds. The truck manifolds had the normal passenger side issues and the driver side manifold dumped into the bottom half of the frame.

Pics of the drivers side.

Yes but with good news comes some bad...

The driveshaft is too short

Not a huge deal but just more $$$$$$.

I got some new mufflers, they were cheap but so am I.

Got the oil pressure sending unit installed

The power steering lines from the '94 TBI were a direct bolt in so that's good.
