Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet

looking forward to pics, I put the motor and tranny in, the parts store shipped the wrong rocker nuts and harmonic so I'm still at a stand still, I'll post pics tomorrow

Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet

well it is but it isn't, the tranny is just temporary for mock up, headers won't work without a real restrictive bend off the collectors so they'll be replaced pre start up and as always, I was shipped wrong parts so I'm at a stand still there and my electrician has been so swamped he hasn't had a chance to get the welder in yet, gives me a chance to clean the garage out though The holes in the frame could allow me to run these headers by moving everything back, but I will know when I mock up the driveshaft tomorrow, my teardown pics look to have everything where it is now, the monte carlo/chevelle style shorty headers look like the right fit for my dilemma if not and I should be able to sell these and break even up here so not to worried

Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet

I ran hooker 4266. Shortys a few times , but I was using 73+ engine mounts, They fit awesome and were a breeze to run the exhaust tucked up into the frame looking sweet buddy!!

Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet

thanks, I may do the same, but the swept style shorty's may be the best way to flow with the crossmembers I have etc, going to see what offers I get locally on my shortys and if I come close to breaking even I will upgrade to ceramic coated as well to save on starters and plug wires

waiting on a day off now to wire in the welder and order some more parts, had a mishap with my right hand though so not in a rush, hoping to get everything in next sunday and start on the cab though, gonna learn to weld left handed if thats what it takes, they make grinders and flap wheels for a reason Yeah it was close to going up for sale, but the sun finally came out to play so I am back to work, woulda been a fight to the bitter end had it come to that, the joys of being in business for yourself

Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet

I have been too busy to work on it lately but I just picked up the wire needed to hook up my welder and I'm looking at a few 60gal compressors, going to sit down and make an order list for my intake pipe plugs, rocker nuts, alternator, and water pump sp hopefully I can give it a test run, and weld up the cab before the snow comes.

Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet

just my 2 cents ....if you are going to do body work you need atleast an 80 gal compressor the 60 gal ones i have had wont keep up with air sanding tools, you will be very annoyed waiting for the compressor to keep up !! now maybe it was my compressors that i tried they were new BlackMax compressors, when i switched to the 80 it worked great

Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet

My 60 gal worked well for me. 80 is better, but not sure the added cost justifies the expense for most home shop users. The 80's are usually a 2 stage pump and much more expensive. BTW, I inspect these things for a living and worked at a plant that builds them for a few years. The key is the pump. A good 60 gal should have a good 2 cylinder pump. They won't build the pressure of a 2 stage, but have good capacity. Also, most air tools don't need the full tank pressure, so using a line regulator set to around 100 psi will generally help the air usage. The only time I had air pressure problems was when I was sand blasting or running the random orbital non-stop. I usually had to stop to change sanding disks etc. anyway, so not a huge problem.

Hope this helps.

Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet

back from the winter, rear fenders and step plates should be in within a week, cab is going back to sandblast to get the inner and outer floors blasted to remove whatever coating was sprayed on so I can re coat with POR15 and repair a few minor spots, electrician is tentatively lined up to have the welder setup next week, we have heard this before though, and I should have a week or two off starting monday so this thread will once again be active, I'm hoping to have the cab repaired, smoothed firewall, and back on the chassis by the end of may long, the weather is nice at last, as always the pics will be plentiful, also have a binding issue with the steering I need to get squared away

Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet

Slacking pretty hard on this build but I hope to have it on the road one day, this forum is a blessing and a bad distraction with all the other builds you drool over you end up changing and adding all the time Got a delivery from AMD with my rear fenders step plates and braces, now I'm waiting to hear back from a local blaster to hit the bottom and inner floor of my cab so I can get to repairing issues and smoothing out the firewall

Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet

Stripping old undercoating is tedious crappy work, sandblasting in GP is ridiculous right now, backlogged til early July and my A.D.D. won't let me wait til then and the cab really isn't in bad shape so I am at it with grinding/stripping/and wire wheels
