Thanks guys. Got some paint done. I end up wasting time and some paint because I have to do all my work outside and I dont want it all to rust.

Re: Used Parts Build

Safety lesson. Dont buy cheap stripping discs:

Luckily it only hit my leg and I had some pretty thick pants on. Not much of a mark but damn it actually hurts quite a bit.

Did some more work on my boxing plates.

Didnt get a shot of them welded in since it got dark.
Started on my watts link

Re: Used Parts Build

Got a fair amount done today.
Welded in boxing plates from yesterday.

One side of watts link mocked up.

Other side mocked up.

All done.

Still need to add a bunch of support to the frame side mounts.

Ran into a problem though. It cycles perfectly for almost all the suspension travel except the top 1.5''. It runs out of link on the driver side and pulls the suspension that way. I disconnected the driver side and it seems 2'' short. I'll have to figure it out later.

Re: Used Parts Build

Is it set up at ride height? At ride hight you want the center link top and bottom to be facing at about 350°/170°. That way you don't get the pull.

Re: Used Parts Build

Not sure if I follow you. Are you talking about the pivot being pretty much vertical? The pic shows it at ride height.

Correct. You don't want the center link to be perfectly straight up and down. Or it could bind when the bars are parallel to ground are ride height. Also make sure the pivot point it centered between frame rails. That could be reason it pulls.

Finished the bars:

Shock mounts. Not the best angle but will work for now.

Going to run these from the notch to the rear bar and the rear bar to the middle bar.

Started cutting but it got late so this is where I left off.
Sick dude. I love it.

No where near as cool as yours man. Those rivets really set the back half off.

How are you painting the inside of the frame? I would be concerned the inside would rust and run out leaving rust stains all over it. I have to paint/coat the inside of my frame where I body dropped it and my notch. Any tips?

Crazy as it sounds, my plan from the get go was not to treat anything and let all of the fab work rust up to sort of give it the same look or patina that all the sheet metal has and occasionally scuff it all back down till it all gets that darkened brownish orange look. Kinda like how a driveshaft looks after years of rust and oil/grease mixing together. Honestly, as long as it takes rust to cancer out metal at least around here in East Texas, I figure all the work I did will outlast me owning it and probably the next owner or whatever. I'm actually thinking about speeding the aging process after a while on the copper rivets to get them to start that blue/green look. As far as coating the insides of your frame or whatever, if it were me, I'd try to change the tip out of what ever primer/paint you wanted to use to a tip that could accept a spray nozzle or straw like spray lubricants use. And either find areas in the frame w holes or possibly drill some some small holes in the frame just small enough to get the nozzle in every 12-14" inches and blast the paint all around inside then afterward, spot weld the holes back up and touch the outside of the frame back up with whatever paint you're planning to use.

If you're letting it patina I'd probably give it a few thin coats of BLO

Re: Used Parts Build

That is way too nice of a back half to let it rust!

Been getting home late and not able to make a ton of noise. Got the templates for my gussets cut out.

Finally got rid of that brace I was using and put in a proper crossmember. The brace was blocking the watts link a bit.

I'll get it all cut out and welded in this weekend.

That's a great idea. Once it starts getting the color I want, I'll wipe it all down.

Re: Used Parts Build

One way to speed up the rusting process on steel is to spray with a vinegar/salt solution. Once it gets to the patina you want, wash it down with water to get all the salt off and clear it.

Re: Used Parts Build

Little morning work

Do you think I should run a tube diagonally from the opposite frame rail to the bottom of the mount? Its pretty long off the frame.

Re: Used Parts Build

And got my watt link fixed.
Budget build right?

Had to lengthen my arms by a few inches

I was more concerned about safety than looks so I sleeved the joint an inch in both directions with some 1.5'' .120 dom.

All clear

If you are going to **** up might as well make it look good right?

And video of it in action

Re: Used Parts Build

I liked your stick watts better. Should have put a plug inside to lengthen your bars. But live and learn. That's a easy thing that can always be replaced if you don't end up liking it.

I was thinking about that but didnt have tube that fit the inside well. Just a reminder to measure twice.

Ordered a blazer tank and straps. Once I get that mounted I should be able to start working on my bed mounts.
