Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
Tryed starting the old beast up today and it started easily enough but I didn't get to warm it up as it was leaking gas badly from the intake manifold. This made no sense to me as first because I put a new gasket in and made sure both surfaces were clean the tightened it up. When I took it all off I found that it was a problem with the new gasket. It wasn't the correct shape and the metal sleeves on the manifold were jamming on the gasket and not seating properly.
Is it normal to have this much carbon on a gasket with tops 15 minutes of running time on them (Most of that time was with the choke on)???

Looking good Nik. That carbon is likely from an exhaust leak

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
Exhaust sounds like its leaking from the sound and if the intake is too that would explain the choke needing to be on. I would say you have a leaking intake and exhaust manifold gasket

My thoughts exactly, some sort of manifold or vacuum leak.

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
Time to check for manifold flange warpage and a new gasket. I remember changing it on mine and it ran real good afterward.

Tj the gasket is brand new, it has maybe 10-15 mins of use on it. I will check for warpage tomorrow

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
This motor is really starting to make me frustrated. I pulled the manifold again this morning. First I cleaned the surfaces off and made sure they were perfectly flat, then I trimmed the gasket so it fit perfectly and then cleaned it up and used some hight heat gasket maker to help seal everything. I then bolted it on carefully and torqued it to the correct specs and then waited so the gasket maker could dry. Then I fired it up and got the same result, bad vaccum leak and exhaust leak. Any suggestions on what to do now? Thanks

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
My guess is that gasket is toast. It has been too long for me, but is that a factory gasket or an aftermarket one> I used a hi-performance gasket on my old 250 when I had to replace an exhaust manifold. It was thicker than factory and seemed tougher. Now whether I really needed it or not , I don't know. I just got one cause it looked better than the stock one. (from Summit Racing)

Here's a bit of an update for everyone. Been doing lots of bodywork so nothing too picture worthy. Here's the fender with almost all the bodywork finished.

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
Oh and even though I won't be picking it up until June or July I thought I would show you guys this hood I just bought from a friend a couple hours away. A 60 gmc hood for the 62! I have always loved the look of these beautiful ugly hoods and now I finally have one. I first really started liking them when I saw namloc's 60 gmc "the snortin bull".
Here's a pic of it, the guy bought the complete 60 burb for $500 cdn. But when he started digging into it he found the entire floor and roof were mostly rust along with most of the other panels. So unfortunately his only option was to part it out.

Fender is looking great. The more I think about it, the more I think I may have to borrow your tailgate cable solution...

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
No unfortunately I haven't had time to mess with it. I know exactly what the problem is now. My neighbor is a mechanics teacher at the college and let me use a tool for testing vaccum leaks. It's pretty much like a smoke machine you would see at Halloween. I hooked it up to the vacuum line and blocked the carb opening off. I saw a little bit of smoke coming from where the manifold bolts to the head. The head and manifold are both straight and clean so it is the gaskets fault.bill (Palfstep70) said he had a similar problem back when he had a straight six and solved it by getting a high performance gasket that was much thicker. Do you know of any king of gasket maker that will handle the heat? Thanks

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
Finally finished the bodywork on the fender. I just sprayed it with some old paint I had laying around to prevent surface rust. I also adjusted the torsion bars to the height I wanted.

Wouldn't even know the fender was modified unless you had a tape measure or a SUPER good eye. lol Nice work.

TJ 's right about the fender mod. Very subtle custom work Nik.

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
Thanks Dale.
Cut more out of the cab corner/support area and attempted to fit the new cab support but the stupid thing is made completely wrong, looks like they'll be getting a strongly worded email about their worthless junk they call quality parts. Last time I'll ever and I mean ever buy repop panels. See how the area that attaches to the inner rocker is the wrong angle. |
