Re: Project Orange Crush (57 3100)

Kees for now I'm doing away with the suicide doors just a ton of fab I'm not yet confident I could do in the allowed time

Lower I thought it was a good use of vans too

Yes my polarity is reversed really the spatter doesn't bother me much so I think for now I will keep what I have since its "what I know" maybe get some .025 to practice with later

My question is how many passes is "normal" before you have a nice finished look? I feel like I'm doing something wrong if I need to touch things up 2-3 times or is that normal?

The hinge pocket situation that I was worried about is in fact a problem so I will have to cut a section out and lower it to match the top bolt hole that kind of set my night back so I just spent time grinding the passenger window opening area and quit early

Re: Project Orange Crush (57 3100)

I always wanted to build one of those minivan doubles, or do something weird like reverse the body on the pan so it drives "backwards".

I'll be watching for the wheelbarrow firewall, I was going to buy a kids wheelbarrow for a trans bump but it turns out I barely need it.

VS, it might not seem like you are getting much done to you but you are moving along at a good rate. You have a lot to do but you will "gitter done" if you keep at it. BTW, I'm glad that you are not going with the front opening doors.

You could always use a couple of 36 Fords if you wanted to weld to cars together.

VAL, not being critical EVER, just trying to help make it easier for you to do good welds and less work.... 2-3 passes is not quick work for sheetmetal, it should be one pass, grind and clean up, done. My only comment was that if your 'pool' of weld has a bunch of crud in it (from the flux or any contaminates or overheat) it will make more work for you.

There are a multitude of videos on Utube that show correct welding techniques and troubleshooting welds with flux core welders, take a look if you want.

just trying to help buddy!

Well if your just doing one pass then by all means learn me! I'm tired of grinding welding grinding welding...... AGHHHHHHH

On this jamb its thick enough I'm comfortable running a bead but on thin stuff I was always told to just tac and move around (and I did out of muscle memory) so how will I ever get a solid weld by tacing around like that?

On the sheetmetal (16-22 ga) you do have to 'tac'.... try doing just a quick CLICK on the trigger for your tacs and not a big blast.... do this around the panel piece a few times and then start 'stitching' between the tacs. CLEAN BEFORE the next lap around.... very critical!

BUT- take a break between rounds so the piece COOLS... if you cant touch it with your bare hand then its too hot still....

hope that helps!

I don't mean to seem like I don't want it I appreciate it thank you guys for the guidance and criticism

As far as the wheel barrow goes that should begin this weekend if I can get these doors hung first I'm tired of tripping over them and don't want the cab completely open to the elements any longer

Re: Project Orange Crush (57 3100)

Val

I'm currently working on my masters degree from the University of Youtube. Got my undergrad degree, just last night..

I did some hot rodding in the 60's, the only sources where the mechanics that would talk to you about stuff when and if they felt like it.

With Youtube that are tons of people that share, Currently I watching videos on TIG welding on sheetmetal and practicing, so far I have gone through about 2 dozen filler rods and not quite there yet.

This forum and the Youtube are my greats resources for knowledge.

Check it out, I'm a way old bugger and still learning new stuff.

Keep on keepin on.

Insanity?

Oh I blew past that the day I graduated Hi-School ( The 60's were real good to me) I'm in another time and dimension, Just ask my wife she'll confirm that I'm truly a Nut Case.

I really enjoy pushin your leg. I think you have great skills and truck loads of common sense which is AWOL in this day and time. You'll do well to listen to Dimples she looks just a tad smarter than youal...

Keep on keepin on.

Re: Project Orange Crush (57 3100)

Thanks guys I like how it turned out a lot and yah my total time if I had to guess in the firewall is maybe 6.5 hours so not bad

Kind of a random question but do any of you have gauges laying around or know anyone that does? I don't need anything to fancy would rather have them have a little "character" I need an oil pressure gauge, fuel gauge and Tach at a minimum but would also be interested in an electronic Speedo not looking for digital anything

Nice work Val! You know, I might have the gauges from my 56 on the shelf. While I should know this, I am not certain. Are car and truck the same?

No the car cluster is different as I have a 55-56 car cluster that came with the truck that confused me for a minute when I when I went to mock it in the dash

Car cluster

Truck cluster

EDIT: I was thinking of simply making an insert for the cluster location while I save up for an actual gauge setup that I like Dakota Digital is 5 blocks from my work but honestly their look doesn't fit my truck or tastes at all

Hey thank you for the compliments Nut Case in my mind your only a true Nut Case if you talk to yourself and respond and if you don't recognize your own insanity. Yes dimples is definitely smarter then two of me combined

Just ordered some ACdelco front shocks from my local parts house for the Nova subframe cheapest I could find that looked half decent got used springs from my step dads Nova since he will be putting in 1" drop springs soon can't beat free
