Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins
Somthing to consider... Make sure that you put your plug wires in clockwise firing order around the dizzy. I did counter-clockwise once and had the same result you are experiencing.

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins
Hey Mac,
If you just want to get it running , Rotate the engine around until mark on the balancer is at zero on the timing tab. Take off the Distributor cap , Note where the Rotor is , Install Number 1 plug wire in the Cap to the left of the mark.(If you have enough slack in your wires) Start your spark plug firing order (Clockwise) from this position , remember the Engine does not care where Number 1 is in the Distributor cap , It can be in any of the eight holes , as long as the rotor is pointing to it. Start engine and Listen to the glorious smells and sounds of a Virgin Small Block come to life. You can re-phase the distributor to put number 1 in the front after the engine break-in if you like. Trust me , this WILL work..... Your friend DESERT |

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins
I had to do what Desert1957 mentioned because of my intake mainfold. Im running a performer airgap and the dizzy will hit the runners. It actually points towards the passenger side now so as to have some adjustment.

It's odd you bring that up - as the more I think about it - I may have missed that and put it just behind (to the right). I may just be one hole off - like Jason said originally. I'm so confused.

It might take you 15-20 mins to try both. Not a big deal Mac.

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins
I'm out on the front of the house in the driveway - in front of an open garage door - which translates to B.T. Barnum's "Greatest Show on Earth" for the neighbors, which makes 15-20 minutes two hours in 'Mac Time.'
If I knew I was going to be so fascinating to those who just want to stop by an "help", I'd have had AAA return the truck to the back of the RV pad for the final start up routine. Mac.

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins
Mac, nice job!! As far as coolant coming out of the catch bottle, get that checked out thoroughly one of the ways that can happen (you didn't eloborate on how much etc) is if your head gasket is leaking and blowing it into the water, if the leak is small enough you might not notice it in performance but it will cause it to bubble and eventually boil. Been there done that but of course on an old engine not new like yours As said above, video........... lol

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins
Great news Mac. The coolant was probaly nothing but it beeing to full and an air bubble. A fresh rebuild will build extra heat cause the tolarances are so close any way. I'm happy for you. What did you do with your timing?

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins
Finally! That's great news! I'm with the other guys, there was probably just an air bubble in the coolant system. Happens all the time with a new engine. If you had a temp gauge, you would notice it fluctuating too. Since it already spewed a little, the bubble is mostly likely out of the system.

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins
when it is running next you may want to just bleed off the heater whih will get the air out of the system (providing your heater is hooked up). with the heater control valve open, disconnect the upper most heater hhose at the firewall until fluid is running out continually
