Re: Bubba's recycling project
I was really happy to find the 69 rear end.
I wanted to stay with the narrow width and the 6 lug wheels. Just put another coat of spray on tonight ,Things may be dry enough by tomorrow to start installing the trailing arms.

Re: Bubba's recycling project
You can jack it up and spin the wheel and count revolutions . Best way is to pull the rear cover and count the teeth on the pinion and ring gear and divide. Then you can check the oil for chunks or stray shrapnel. The ring gear should have a stamp with the tooth count and a date code
If it is a proper ratio, just swap them. The trailer does not care what the ratio is...As long as it turns

It's 10 out. I'm going for it. Might just have a axle for free. It was a manual trans though.Damn and I just remember it's 3/4 ton 8 lug.

Re: Bubba's recycling project
The funny thing is I don't drink. I did find out that I'm hooked on caffine. Two days without had a bad headache the whole time. When I was in the Navy I did all my drinking for the rest of my life.

Re: Bubba's recycling project
WOW I just discovered that they make conversion Universal joints.
As I was installing the drive line and discovered the new 69 yoke was wider than the old 64. It was the same diameter caps, just about 1/2" wider across the caps. A trip to the driveline shop found this conversion U-joint for about 20 bucks. I still had to press it in myself or leave the driveshaft until they had time next week. A lot easier than changing and rewelding the end of the driveline and a whole lot easier than trying to change the pinion yoke and tear the rear end apart

Re: Bubba's recycling project
I decided to build adjustable track bar while I had things apart.
Used a spare track bar perch from a spare 72 frame Used the leftover parts from the 64 tie rods and adjusters Cut the inner rod end stem off the joint. this is the 5/8-18 RH thread

Re: Bubba's recycling project
I cut off the mounting eye on the old 64 track bar and welded the tie rod on to it , Turned 5/8 -18 LH threads on the remaining piece of the track bar and used the adjuster in the middle.

Re: Bubba's recycling project
Drilled the threads out of a big nut and slipped it over the adjuster and welded it in the middle.
New Energy Suspension bushings. Total cost of the track bar was the 13 bucks for the bushings and a little time to build it.

Re: Bubba's recycling project
Why do you need an adjustable one? I like the idea. Making stuff from nothing.$$ You going for a drive? I need to change my track bar. It's horizontal.

Re: Bubba's recycling project
The longer the track bar, the less arc it travels and the less side to side movement of the axle occurs.. See........ longer is better
The 64 axle has a bracket welded to the housing which the track bar mounted The 69 had a stud pressed in the upper right corner of the casting. I drilled and pressed out the post and only the hole remains. The panhard bar would have been shorter, and I have a 72 bar which would have fit, But I liked the idea of the longer bar , which is a necessity for lowered trucks.. I made it adjustable so the length could be changed if needed to center the axle under the truck. When you have the front wheel alignment done they should measure the thrust angle of the rear and see how true and square the frame is and if rear axle is mounted square in relationship to the front. Have you ever followed cars traveling done the road that have been badly wrecked? They now travel a little sideways down the road with the rear tires tracking offset from the path of the front tires. The frame is bent from true square the rear axle is mounted at an angle.

Re: Bubba's recycling project
That's how I drive my wifes Ford. Mines short. I'm screwed. I was thinking it was more for trucks on air bags. Ones that move a bunch. I know the angle make a difference. See how mine is flat. I think it would handle better if I had better angle? I think mine even hits the diff cover.

Re: Bubba's recycling project
I need to quit throwing things away. I had one of those brackets that attaches to the swing arm. I cut it off when I did my four link. I'll have to look around. I need a longer trac bar.I want to be like Bubba. You know whats weird My axle doesn't look like your 64 axle? I wonder If mine has been swapped already.

Re: Bubba's recycling project
Having your panhard bar parallel to the axle tube at ride height is what you want.

Re: Bubba's recycling project
Took a test drive in the warm 55*F sunshine this afternoon. Been raining too darn much and everything is well saturated and starting to slide. Spent the holiday reattaching the emergency brake cables and torquing everything down. Drove smooth but I ordered new gas shocks and they won't be here till tomorrow, So it bounces really bad with no shocks. did not go too fast, but all is working well. I did install all new rear brake shoes and hardware, the drums were still nice so they were not turned and are still in tolerances. The old shoes were about half worn , but now I won't have to do them again for a while. I will order the proper speedometer drive gears in the morning. It will be nice to have the speedometer accurate again.
