Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...

Are you going to have some sort of bracing from the top of the shock towers? That front section of minx frame looks like it could be tied into the bottom of the new section, but I suppose it depends on the other suspension/steering parts that need to fit in there. Looks like a hack job now, but I'm sure you'll get it all tied together and looking like it was that way from the factory.

This build is cute an all, but I have to say, I miss the progress reports from the burb.

The front is barely tied in just to hold position for now. There will be boxing top and bottom and yes tower bracing triangulated back to the firewall and a removable strut brace laterally.

Nice man...I will try to make it over after I pick up the kids tonight to check out the progress in person.

Now get out there and cut the other side!

He could probably use an old rusty barbecue lid, and make it look like it came out of a factory with his skill.

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...

How did I miss that?

No wheelbarrow (I know where that idea came from) or BBQ lids here. But I'd use one if it met my needs.

Yesterday I put the engine in place again so I could mark the rack position and box the frame accordingly.

Since it's a bit of a PITA to get the engine/trans in/out I decided to knock some other things out while it was in there. I really wanted to see if my header would work with the added clearance gained with the straight frame rail: NOPE. Not without modification anyway.

I was able to remove 3/4-1" from the primaries right by the flange to suck it in closer to the block.

3/4" taken off (one rolled away):

The two center pipes are the real problem. I was able to get another 1/4"-"3/8" off them forcing them in with a hose clamp:

The 4th cylinder did not want to cooperate.

Be we have ways...

Where there's a will, a hammer, some visegrips, a cutting wheel and a welder, there's a way. Man that's tight.

It is tight. I will have to clearance the frame rail a bit.

Also had to make some room in the floor (view from inside on PS):

But otherwise it's like it was made for it!

Remember that header wrap adds to the thickness. Considering how close everything is in there, I would say the wrap is mandatory.

It will be ceramic coated and I'll make a heat shield. Not a big fan of header wrap but I'll use it if I have too.

damn that's tight. and you still have clearance between the firewall and the valve cover? your passenger is gonna have a hot foot but awesome work FF. i was looking at the use of hose clamps thinking *thwanggggg* if it let go.

It's just a repeat of the PS on the DS for the most part. I'll post pics when it's boxed. I've done some more work on the header too. I can post those when it's done (soon).

Looking good Mike! You had me thinking about doing a 4 banger power plant for an early scratch built roadster pick up I am designing but I came across a 4 cam lincoln 4.6 mod with 50 K on it that will fit the bill a bit better for this build but maybe next time in a little 34 roadster or something. Keep up the progress and get back to that Hoe sometime soon

I'm no ford guy, but those 4.6's are some good cheap power. I've seen some builds where guys have pulled a butt load of HP out of them relatively cheap.

Love 4cammers. The F20C is a good match for this car's intended use; daily street and occasional weekend ax/drift/silliness.

Still making progress on the DS. I've also been doing a lot of research for the selection/design of the steering. It's not a matter of simply selecting a rack with the right inner-to-inner tie rod length and putting it in the right position. The position of the engine in this car will not allow the correct placement of a "conventional" rack. So I'm designing the steering around a center steer rack similar to this:

The problem is that all the center steer units I can find are designed for rear steer. I may end up getting a RHD rear steer unit and using it for LHD front steer... We'll see.

Rear steer?

As in the rack mounted to the rear of the front wheels, or steering on the rear wheels?

Rear steer: Tie-rods/steering-arms aft of wheel center on the front wheels.
