I was able to re-mold the suburban rear carpet to fit the truck cab floor or in the back using a heat gun one section st a time, here is a crappy before picture and an after. I will try steaming the remaining wrinkles before I put the seats back in. I’m happy with it.

Thank you, and here is a picture of my new steamer and a couple pics after steaming it. I’m really happy with the results, carpet is laying down much better now. When I get the seats bolted in I will steam it again and weight it down in a couple of areas.

What is the distance between
Your front cab mount and the rear Cab mount bolts ?
You will see why I ask in my build thread later.

Thank you, like I said I’m real happy with the carpet and being able to mold the suburban rear carpet to my floor.

With no compensation for the difference in front bolt thread size and rear bolt head size the distance is about 74 7/8” to 74 15/16”, both sides are almost exactly the same measurement.
The rear bolt head size is 5/8 and both measurements were on a flat, the front bolts are 9/16 threads I think but I have never measured them.

I got one seat done, the steamer was very helpful getting the cover on and smoothin it out.

I was planning on painting the plastic seat back cover white but I may not, I will have to see how bad it clashes when I get all the seats in, it is a work truck and it would definitely get scratched up pretty quick.

Thanks and I never thought about...for now. For now I will leave them black and see if I like them. Great idea.

Thanks, I’m plugging away at it everyday and I’m not stopping until The interior is done and the roof is welded and sealed. Everything else is on hold for this to get finished.

I like the black. It ties in with a lot of the other black interior pieces in the truck. The whole thing is really looking great!

Thank you, I kind of think the black blends too. I’m painting the rear seat frame now, so tomorrow I will put the cover on it and get it installed then I will know how it really looks.

For over 20 years I told friends I would paint my 72' red and white. A few years ago, when I really started tearing into the truck for a full rebuild I started to reconsider the color. I don't know why it is such a hard decision for me. I wish I wouldn't get so hung up on it, but I do... Well, I finally landed on owning a blue truck, probably with a white roof and sides. I'm still not even sure which blue truthfully! A few weeks ago Randy throws up a beautiful blue on blue houndstooth seat cover and blue carpet at a good price and I jumped on it like butter on a hot biscuit!! A few days later a large box was brought to my door and I tore into it... the relief flowed through my brain like when a junkie gets his dope.

Now I see this work of art.....

Just shoot me now.

I have come to realize that a man needs a chevy truck in each color. Thats the only solution for me.

Blue and white is beautiful and I love the houndstooth, this truck was almost blue but I did blue and white, and orange and white in the past so this one is red. Now my short bed I’m building to sell it and I want max appeal, it was going to be black and white with blue interior but I changed my mind, I think the most popular color is blue and white so I decided blue and white and decided to do blue buckets since everybody likes them so much, that’s why I sold the houndstooth bench cover.

I prefer white interior in most trucks because it’s clean and uncommon, I did black in my k10 because it’s a spec truck and I think people like black more, the yellow and white exterior on that one with white interior would have been super sharp I think.
I also think white interior on a blue and white truck would be sharp but I have real nice blue door panels, seat belts, headliner and carpet already.

I got the rear seat upholstered and installed. I removed the spring from the adjusting mechanism so it doesn’t fly forward, I think that way I can move it forward and back when looking for crap I have stored under the seat ( remember its a work truck)
Keeping it work ready, I think I am going to build a simple bar, like a closet rod, across the open area where the jack sits on the passenger side by the gas tank, I will hang tie downs off the bar.

I also installed the black glovebox door that came on this gmc cab, seeing if I like it. It all ties together but I will be painting one red which I think will look better, although gmc’s usually have a interior color cluster and glovebox door.

This truck has a working factory cruise control
Working speed warning which I just installed the buzzer and wiring last week
Tach works with my Diesel engine but reads low, I need to add a couple grooves to my harmonic balance to get it reading correct.
Rebuilt and functioning ac system

One of my next projects is to sew up a repro set of shoulder belts for front and rear, I have the buckles, repro end covers and Red 3 panel belt webbing and red thread. I just need to sit down and do it. I might need a larger needle the seatbelt thread is pretty heavy.

I was just going through your build and enjoying every page, in post 147, I am curious if you built the cummins motor mounts and cross member or did you buy them? I'm getting ready to do the cummins swap and would like to use the 2nd gen motor mounts but haven't found anyone who makes the cross member like yours.

I've been going through your pictures and really getting all I can from them. I noticed in one picture that your water inlet was pointed directly into the frame rail, what did you do to get around that? I also noticed you used the intercooler from the donor truck. Is it mounted upside down? And did you have to modify it to make it fit?
I actually saw you leaving Portland Expo Center last April, I got pretty close in traffic, but at that time I didn't know about this thread. I really admire your skills, any help would be appreciated !!

I'm also considering sending a couple hubcaps your way to have the centers cut out...

Diesel burner, i meant to answer your questions the other day...
I built the crossmember, its, if i remember right is 2x3x 3/16 steel tube with 1/4” side and end plates. The 3” wide tube is almost perfect width for second gen mounts, i bolted the side plates to the mounts first then welded it, the mounts are slightly wider and bolting it first created the proper width, small gap welded up.

I mounted the engine low enough for the turbo to barely (1/4”) clear the factory AC box, also mounted towards driver side too for same reason, had to narrow driver side frame rsil about 1/4” or so before boxing it to enable use of gen 2 mounts.
This put the engine kind of low, crossmember gets close to front diff, 4” lift is rewuired.
Water inlet is 1/3 into frame rail, i did like a reverse C notch in the boxed frame rail for clearance.

Nothing new to report really. Went camping in the crew last weekend with my iwfe and daughter, took it on some 4wd roads, the plan was 100 mike trip on WA back country discovery route. Hit snow on 2 different sections at about 5000ft and had to turn back. We had a great time, no pics though.

I picked up this very nice bed yesterday in Daringoton, Wa off facebook. Guy was asking $300 which is a good to great buy, then we got to chatting about his truck and he needed the carb tuned on a new engine, he said he would give me the bed if i tuned his truck.
I took him up on it, i feel bad cause i had it running great in about 10 minutes, then spent another 20 fiddling around checking things. He was ecstatic though so i was happy to take the bed for my work.
The bed has a beautiful rust free floor with very few dents. We flipped it up on end then loaded it upside down sideways on his k20, then i backed up to his truck and we slid it over onto my bed rails which i padded with cedar fence boards. Tied it down with c clamps.

Score! It is nice when we can get things for cheap because we gave a couple minutes of our time, and a little bit of know how!
