update.

pretty minor but exciting update for me. i’ve been talking about spraying feather fill for the last yr and i was finally able to get a couple of coats down on the bedsides. I can already tell i still have lots of sanding in my future

Bed is completely bolted together. I only needed to slot a couple holes with the new floor.


I used this 3m strip caulk for the seam between the bed and tubs. It seemed to work pretty solid and from the description it seemed like a good material for the job.

Feather fill sprayed on pretty good for my first time. Looking forward to getting everything else in the near future



Lastly, I finished seam sealing the bed. Very tedious work with all the taping for clean lines.

quick update before the weekend.

i finished getting the cab in feather fill. i only have a few more spots to spray before the sanding starts up again. This body work can be exhausting and seem never ending. hope the end result looks straight




times like this i wished i had a gmc that taping of the letters is exhausting. Should save me from doing some non-necessary sanding!

thanks much. the tape should save some time from unneeded sanding. I know i’ll have plenty of that in my future.

I finished spraying the feather fill over a week ago and then jumped into sanding mode. i’ve been trying to get a panel/area done a night. Just a few areas so far that will require some glaze. Hopefully in the near future my updates will include some urethane primer

Small update -

I’ve been spending an hour here and there in the shop when it’s not too hot out. Mainly been working on the hood. It had a lot of flimsiness to it from the rotting hood brace pads. I did a pretty thorough search on here with minimal luck on what to replace it with. Tried using the foam pads but they didn’t work too swell. So I talked to a fella who restores cars for a living and he said i would Be better off using some 1 part sealer every 6” or so. Seemed to make the hood more solid. Hopefully it holds up too well and the hood doesn’t move too much with the fluctuating temps... time will tell.

Test fit with the new hinges I’ve had for awhile. They seem to be a nice piece. The manufacturer forgot a couple pieces so i couldn’t hook the gas struts up yet. Hopefully i receive them in the next week or so.

Tonight i was able to get the hood in feather fill. Back to sanding

Very nice. And I was thinking about using some of my leftover KILLMAT sound proofing between the hood skin and support rails. You guys think this will work ok? Might have to layer it 2-3 layers it's so thin but I was thinking seam sealer might shrink over time or get too hard with the heat over the years?

That was one of the threads i looked into. I had purchased some of the flexible foam stuff and i did a little trial run with it. The foam definitely expands great but i was worried it would push the hood sheet metal outward too much. The guy i talked to does this stuff for a living and seems pretty reputable, so hopefully his method works.

I think 1k seam sealer I’m using should have enough flex in it and be pretty durable. I just used a dab of it about every 6 inches. Definitely got rid of the vibrating/popping sheet metal. We shall see how it holds up...
I think your idea could work. I think the key is making sure they can move independent of each other. The hood in my opinion is the most finicky panel for body work.

The missing parts for my hinges arrived this morning. Pretty happy with Summit’s customer service. Once they got ahold of the manufacturer, the parts were over nighted which i was not expecting

Anyways, spent 30 minutes piecing it together and doing a rough alignment of the hood. These hinges are pretty sweet and seem to allow for a tad more adjustment than the original hinges which is nice. They weren’t cheap but i think the money was worth it

Last update for the weekend. Before i blow the pickup apart again for the urethane primer and final sanding, i only have a few items left i need to do. One of those items was locating my mirrors. Had my bro over to hold them in place until i liked the location. I used threaded rivnuts to hold the mount in place.

I know these mirrors aren’t for everyone, but they seem to function well and i think they’ll look pretty good when the rest of the pickup is painted. The mirrors came from Ring Brothers, same manufacturer as my hood hinges.







Thanks to board member Siggy, the other item on the agenda was not originally planned, but I couldn’t resist I had been looking into the Altman Easy Latch Kit for our doors, and after seeing his posts about them, i pulled the trigger. Looking forward to getting those installed in the near future.

Coolest update I’ve had to date....

My wife gave delivery to our first kid earlier this week, a healthy baby boy. It’s been quite the adjustment, but digging every moment of it so far. Progress is definitely going to be slowing down a bit which is unfortunate, but I’ll still try to sneak up to the shop when time permits.

In the meantime, I’ll continue to look at the build threads to help keep the motivation going and update when i can

Little update-
The little guy is 2 months old and boy has it gone fast. I really haven’t had much time in the shop, but between diaper changes I’ve been able to knock a few things out.

I saw a few other members on here that had purchased these altman easy latches and they looked like a nice product. After some research on the forum and elsewhere online, I decided to make the purchase.


The panel that installs on the door was pretty straight forward to install. Shot them with some primer before i installed them. I’ll seam seal them and the rest of the doors when I tear it all apart again.


Early on I purchased some aluminum hexagon mesh for a grill insert. After i completed the shaping and figured out how I would attach it to the grill, i realized I’d lose access to the hood latch handle. After scouring the forum, i found one post about a simple mod that someone did for a similar reason. I decided to make a under the bumper hood latch handle.
Cut the handle off and flipped it.


Used some small angle iron for a bracket and some steel flat bar as my handle. Here it is mocked up to ensure it worked. I’ll eventually pretty it up a little bit and add some sort of padding/handle latch to the bottom of the core support to prevent it from swinging around while driving. Also, I need to get some new bolts, as i just used what i had laying around to mock it up.


Lastly, I purchased a few small items for the interior. Still unsure if I’ll use these cup holders. It’s a nice piece, but I’m still on the fence on whether or not I’ll use my 67-72 seat or if I’ll get something out of a newer rig that has a fold down console/cup holder.


I saw this thread and thought it was a pretty cool seat swap. I’ve searched around on CL and market place, but so far i haven’t seen anything.

All awesome work man. Really like all these ideas, grill mesh and relocated handle is sweet. I'm in the fence too on cup holders with bench seat. Where do I put them.
