I and anyone that has every attempted to repair the rust on these old trucks feels your pain. It is not just LMC panels; I think they are all of them are made in one place. I had cab corners that came with my truck. They did not fit right. A good friend of mine had some Tabco corners from the mid 90’s I think. He loaned them to me and although they fit better than the ones I had they still were not right. I fitted them the best I could and then welded them in slowly adjusting them as I went. They both look good in my opinion. You could try Tabco and see if they are better.. Let me know how it goes… good luck

Im just welding them in slowly. I am going to mount the door to make sure the body line is where I want it. If the back isn't perfect, the bed will hide it. It pains me to say this being a perfectionist, but what else can I do. Thanks for letting me know about the other cab corners. I would hate to buy another corner and be just as frusterated and out the cash!

Joedirt, if you order from Tabco, be sure to ask them if they have USA stock. I talked to one of there tech. support guys and he said when they run out they use the cheap import stuff. Just a heads up. good luck!

Re: Crash's 72 K10

Started out the afternoon removing the dash from the old cab in preparation for the new AC dash the McBassin fixed me up with.. Thanks Mike.

The old dash had a real bad case of rust..

Guess what I found… more cancer…. I hate it…

Cut it out.. POR15.. Patch it tomorrow.

I hung a door to check the rocker fitment.. I thought I could fit the rocker after I hung the door.. Sorry, it just did not.. I will pull the door tomorrow and try again..

Nice work on the dash Mark. Too bad about the hidden rust. It's hard to believe how these things find ways to rust from the inside out. Keep up the fight, it'll be worth it in the end.

Thanks Mike...

No problem with the rust.. I own it....

It really is a poorly designed system..

Progress is going to slow down tomorrow.. I am going to fire up the boat and take it for a spin...

Hope you have a great weekend..

Re: Crash's 72 K10

Started the day finshing the patches that go behind the dash mounting point.

Next I worked on test fitting the doors for rocker fitment. Everything looked fine… To me anyway.

Then I moved on to more rust repair.. Basically turned the cab almost all the way over to make it easier to get to the problems.

The first spot was a double layered area.. First patch in place.

Second patch in place, it is way under the dash, so it will never be seen..

Similar problem on the other side..

I think this is the only cab rust spot left.. let’s hope.. I will work on this tomorrow

On the brighter side of things, I de-winterized the boat and took it out for a while this afternoon.. I might try to do some fishing tomorrow…

Re: Crash's 72 K10

I think this is the last spot of rust.. Time will tell..

Before

After

Next I sandblasted the firewall and the inside of the cab.

Inside

Dash

Outside

Welded the patch on the outside as well.

Tomorrow, I will por15 the inside of the dash and the inside of the firewall. I need to find some sheet metal to start filling holes in the firewall. I will also start grinding the welds on the cab corners and prepping the rockers for install.

Nice job ! You are whopping the rust. I think next time I will buy one from Arizona. These trucks really seem to have been designed to rot out in a bad way, more so than any other vehicle I have seen.

Re: Crash's 72 K10

I was just looking over more of your rust repair and noticed this.

What is it? custom piece or factory? my truck doesn't have those.

The piece bolted to the front of the cab support that goes out behind the "A" pillar fender mounting tab. Thanks.

We were just talking about this piece the other day. I have seen them on some cabs but not all them had it. I'm not sure if it was a 71 up thing or not? My 70 CST was original and didn't have them. Just extra support like stated above.

Thanks to everyone for the words of encouragement. I needed it.. I think I am close on the rust repair. I still have a few welds to clean up and lots of sanding and body work to do. Then on the doors …

Re: Crash's 72 K10

Time for a update..
Started on the dash, first step removing the key switch…

Then I painted the inside of the dash and upper firewall with POR15.

While I was waiting on the paint to dry I started on the u-joints.. Really easy when you only have to install the u-joint on one yoke..

After that I worked on fixing the wiring harness that runs from the cab to the rear of the truck. The old wire insulation was old and brittle, so I replaced it with some new wire.

Paint dried very fast due to the high humidly. Time to test fit the dash..

Started the install of the 3rd brake light and cargo light. It fit OK.. I will need to work a little bit on it to get it to seal well.

Did a little more sand blasting on the cab.. I have learned a great lesson.. Sandblast everything you can before you start repairing anything. I found about 10 smaller rusted out places after I sandblasted areas that had great looking paint. I should be able to repair the spots this weekend.

A couple of pic’s of the inside of the cab after sandblasting…

Tomorrow I will cut the 69-72 drivers side firewall out and replace the 67-68 in the cab I have now.

Have a great day...

Good job, it is really coming together, always more than I person thinks isn't it. I just started on the doors of my 71 4x4 last night and got one ready to reinstall but finding other things of course, all cool though. You have a good build going on there, keep at it.
