Re: Lets see the survivor trucks! original paint only!
1970 GMC Sierra Grande. Driver side front fender has been repainted, otherwise all original paint and some character adding patina growing on the pass side fender. Man, I just live and die trying to find original paint trucks.....

Re: Lets see the survivor trucks! original paint only!
This is my 1972 Super pretty much all original except for the rear bumper. And maybe the rims?? I've had it for quite a few years and haven't really done much to it except the normal stuff.

Re: Lets see the survivor trucks! original paint only!
Being as how I've never done this before,.. how do you get this polished patina look? Do you just buff it down and then wax it?

Re: Lets see the survivor trucks! original paint only!
I have done several over the course of the past 30 years and here's my formula. I will wetsand w/2000 grit sandpaper, buff with Wizard Mystic Cut 11048 and use NuFinish wax. You'll have to do that on the outside of your truck to get that cloudy/faded paint off. On the inside, use just the Wizards and the wax you'll be AMAZED at how good it looks. If you have paint left, that will take it back to just about brand new, blemishes, and all, inside the truck and outside. These were all painted manually by a human being and some were better painters than others, so there are imperfections and you will quickly spot them. And the Wizard will also bring the stainless steel trim around the front and back glass back to a high gloss, also.
Removing trim, door handles, badges etc makes a significant difference in the overall finished look because you just can't get close enough (or behind them) even with a hand held cloth to remove all of the dead paint. You'll have a "faded paint halo effect". When hand buffing, use a good 100% cotton washcloth, wet it, wring it out and fold it into quarters. Keep it damp thruought the process and rinse it periodically to remove the dead paint/compound buildup. It is a long tedious, process, but at the end of the day, your truck will look terrific. You may have $100 at most, in supply cost. Have you priced a paint job lately? Have you priced the same service at a body shop lately? I will guarantee you that there is no better paint than what was put on at the factory and you'll will never get that factory original look back, once they're repainted. My 70 GMC, above, looked worse than yours before I started. PM me if you have any questions. Last edited by 73737373; 12-18-2015 at 03:31 PM. Reason: added more info |

1967 C20 only thing that is not original are the tires and rims and I have the split rims. Has original Edmark Chevrolet emblem in chrome on the cowl, rear farmer bumper and the stock radio.

My 1971 Cheyenne Super with the 1992 L98 I installed about 20 years ago. Eventually, I'm gonna figure out how to post more than one picture at a time...

Re: Lets see the survivor trucks! original paint only!
I bought this '72 GMC K10 from the original owner last week. He was 80 years old and couldn't take the truck out on his annual hunting trip anymore.
Has crate engine with 11,000 miles, working A/C and still has the AM only stereo and dash speaker.

Cooper,
Nice link, but that truck has been repainted, at least the driver side door has as they did a lousy job masking around the "Custom Camper" badge. |
