I would say that is a concept. But back then they did build one off cars for management types.

Like this 1950 Olds sedan delivery. They were made in extremely low numbers and never sold to the public.

I was lucky enough to see one at either Goodguys or GNRS. I can't remember which. But I remember that car. It was beautiful. This pic may be the one I saw.

Just a decade or so too soon.

In the 1960s it would have had a mattress in the back and flowers painted all over the outside.

Re: Pic Thread: Station Wagons

Those are so cool. Did you know in the mid-50s they sold Pontiac Sedan Deliveries as GMCs? I had advertising info on another computer that pooped out. searching is frustrating because so many people confuse panel trucks with sedan deliveries. You search GMC sedan delivery and you get panel trucks.

That mica paint sure works on those rolly polly bodies. My buddy who is a sign painter/air brush artist has one of these he did back in the hippy days. 100% mural on a baby blue base. It transitions from daylight with puffy clouds to a night storm sky. He may have been high when he 'dreamed' it up . He calls it "The Cloud". This mica paint reminded me of it

Oooh… sexy little thing. That's somebody's baby. I always liked how the rear wheel openings were "cut-out" of the Dart and Valiant wagons. Slant 6 I bet. Notice the hitch?

I would love to have this as my grocery getter to come down off the mountain with (if I lived up on the mountain)

Re: Pic Thread: Station Wagons

I'd like to work out of a sedan delivery like that. I always dreamed of living in a pleasant little picturesque town being the town carpenter/builder guy with a fleet of cool trucks. Start with a Harley Servicar for the lightest stuff, Sedan Delivery, Advance Design Panel and 1.5t dump truck. Of couse a cool pickum up.

In the mountains might go more with '60-'72 4wd stuff. K/20 Panel and a NAPCO medium duty dump. That's where the 4wd '55 sedan delivery comes in. You have to be practical when it comes to business you know

Now there's a traveling machine! I had a guy working for me, brother in law for a while, who drove a metallic blue '76 Malibu Classic we used to all pile in and go places in. A fun machine! His had rallies with narrow whitewalls, but otherwise just like this

I have a hard time reading articles written by opinionate snobs. He starts right off with stating his opinion as fact that station wagons are not cool. Well, I absolutely disagree. Thanks for sharing. I'm sure others will enjoy it

I haven't really gotten into woodies in this thread. I think they could have their own thread. It seems there is endless material for steel wagons as it is, plus in a woodies thread we would have truck based woodies to make it another interesting and varied thread. Suburbans fit this thread, but I'm stuck on the car platform

That pic brings back memories for me. I bought my wife a 76 Malibu Classic when she got pregnant. With another kid on the way her car was getting too small and so was my budget. It was big and cheap. What a great car. It was ugly as sin. But a great ride with plenty of room. It worked.

For those that don't think wagons are cool. I think a lot of that goes back to childhood. Back then they weren't cool. They were what our mom's piled us into. We all wanted hot rods or muscle cars. Or at least I did. It's all a matter of perspective. These days I would buy a wagon in a hot second.

My wife's stepdad had a Studebaker Hawk that she was embarrassed to ride in as a kid. Now she looks for them on CL.
If she finds the right one I might just find it parked in my driveway. Times change. So do opinions.

I disagree to some extent. The subtitle of the article I posted actually says "If you don’t think station wagons are cool, take a look at these classic American wagons and change your mind". He does state in the first paragraph that he thinks "Station wagons are not inherently cool..." That said, he goes on to talk about 10 that he actually thinks are cool.

Enjoy the pictures in the article!

Here are 3 we've owned. You can probably tell I liked the faux woody versions. They're all cool of course!

#1- 1974 Vega GT/Estate with 4-speed and A/C.
#2- 1980 Caprice Estate. Our 1st diesel.
#3- 1984 Buick

It seems to me the writer just woke up, is what I was saying. Just because his eyes are now open to considering "only his selected examples" as cool. I'm saying, to us car guys from way back they were always cool. I grew up with the '60s surfing scene where wagons were all the buzz. As a kid, I wanted to create a GTO station wagon. Gassers were king. Nothing like a jacked up '55 gasser. But a jacked up gasser '55 Nomad steals the show. I've even seen factory ordered 427 4spd 4.10 posi Impala wagons. Somebody thought wagons were cool back then. Why did Chevy make the Nomad if Station wagons were inherently uncool? About everyone made a sexy version of a wagon.

I just find it hard to find a writer who comes from the ranks and can write unpretentiously. They can have their opinions but those should be stated as such, not as an authoritative fact. I admit, I am harder to please than some. And my opinion is mine. I hope others enjoy the article and thanks for sharing. I'm just into the pictures

Re: Pic Thread: Station Wagons

I'm partial to Cadillac's.

I almost bought an Eldorado convertible once. But it was fried like someone put it in a microwave. Too bad. I had the money in my pocket and had to walk away even though I really wanted it. But it just screamed problems.

But my son in law has a really nice Eldorado convertible. So all I need to do now is wait for when he's not looking and grab the keys.

Here is a really bad pic of it.

I wish they could make one, call it the K/5. Downsized to early Bronco/Scout size with removeable top and tough solid axle drivetrain like a Rubicon. I don't even care if the modernize it's look, but sure would be a great one to do retro style, as in a thing Chevy has yet to come close to doing. Kinda sorta the Camaro, but not really
